The two cuties around me are my fawns. The fawn I am holding is 2 days old. A little male and that sucker was vocal!! We have 140 acres of wheat ready to harvest, so I took my little girl out and took some photos for her future wedding day montage. Her mother and I have decided that we are going to be very liberal with her and let her start dating around the age 30!!!!! My wife holding the first fawn of the year. A little doe.

Your not supposed to pick them up or move them I have heard that with human smell on them that the does will sometimes reject them.

Your not supposed to pick them up or move them I have heard that with human smell on them that the does will sometimes reject them. Yup..... This is a myth. The biggest problem with handling or "scenting" a fawn is that you are exposing it to predators by making it possible for something else to smell it. Fawns are "scent free" as the doe will lick it clean until it is... for a defense mechanism. They also will lay perfectly still for about the first 3 days of life or so. This leads people to believe that they are "abandoned" and will pick them up and try to rescue them, when actually, the mother is usually near by and will return to them. If the doe smells anything on the fawn, she will clean it again. edit: I'm not busting anybody's chops for handling a fawn I literally handle hundreds of them each year ear tagging them, I just wanted to share a couple of facts. Next time you have the opportunity to pick one up, smell it... its crazy how they have ZERO scent. a piece of paper has more scent that they do!!

Ok everybody lets pump the brakes a little here. My apologies for not communicating better. These fawns are the first fawns born in our breeder pens. All of our does are hand raised and actually don't mind us picking the babies up. First_Chance, you are right, we only have about 3 days to get them tagged and tattooed, and then good luck catching them after that....lol. As a biologist myself, I can't tell you how many calls I have gotten from people thinking fawns are abandoned or rejected by their mothers. I generally tell them to go put them back where they found them. I typically will not handle one in the wild myself unless I see it laying in an ant bed. Thank you guys for your passion and concern for these babies and I will try to be more clear next time.

We're about a month behind you on fawns down in S. Tx as we plan to start walking pens around June 28th. We work them at night with lights and walk all the pens three nights a week to try and get everything before they get "mobile" . You're right, it can be quite the rodeo after the three day "grace period" !! Great pictures! Here's a couple from down south.

That's smart cause you can catch eyes at night. We typically miss at least one every year. We walk ours in a grid pattern during the day because we generally walk the pens, check health and feed corn and "treats" every afternoon. We try and keep things very calm and perform normal patterns to keep stress levels down on the deer.

yes, the eyes do help. We typically don't re-enter our pens after penning in the fall. Just check protein/water daily which can be done from the front of the pens. The night walks also help with keeping stress levels down on the does as ours are re-caught from the pasture each year and stay pretty wild. It can get a little exciting sometimes when several of them have been pushed to one end of a pen and decide its time to blow past you in the dark!
