Farmer loses prize antlers to Iowa state officials from a trophy whitetail deer that he claims was suffering from a broken leg when he killed it out of mercy.

So what makes it worth so much? I've got a 17 point mount I'd sell for that.

Wow...so according to this guy if you see an injured deer your allowed to harvest it with no tags at any time of year...no brainer...shouldn't have even made it to court. Poacher....nuff said

That whole story stinks to high heaven. He admitted to late/improper tagging anyway.

Glad they took 'em.

The ability to make antler reproductions and molds is what makes it worth some good money..

"IF" he really put down a mortally wounded and suffering injured deer I got no gripe with what he did and wouldn't go so far as to call him a poacher. Probably blabbing got him in trouble for doing a good deed... that's a big if though.

Apparently the game officials were investigating some other potential illegal activity by some other yahoos, and saw these antlers in the man's possession without the proper tag in place.

I think any hunter with common sense would know that If you shoot a deer with antlers like that you had better have a legal tag to put on it or things are not going to go well for you in the near future.

He had a legal tag apparently. He moved it and then tagged it which is common but illegal. Not sure why he cut the head off first so that makes it worse and weird. Appears the main issue is he waited 5 days to report it (which maybe the tip off caused him to) and in Iowa it must be reported by midnight of the day it was shot. They don't mess around there. Throw in Oklahoma hunters with no licenses so who knows what really happened. Was he hosting them???

I think the main problem is he didn't keep his mouth shut.
