I didn't think they were that aggressive.

My uncle was bow hunting from up a tree, and a group of javelinas passed under the tree. He shot one of the javis through the shoulders and the arrow pinned him to the ground. All hell broke loose, and the other javelinas attacked the wounded one, and in a few minutes there wasn't anything left except a bloody stain on the ground. My uncle waited about an hour until the pigs all left, then quietly climbed down and went home.

Javelnia are not that aggressive, but they are not afraid of people or culture and can integrate readily into neighborhoods where there is sufficient habitat, just like many other animals often do. However, they are wild animals. Keep in mind that those purdy non-aggressive deer injure a bunch of people each year and even kill a few in "deer attacks" (never mind the vehicle-deer collisions). http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2005-12-01-deer-attacks_x.htm As noted, this is a numbers game and there are a lot of human deer encounters and a certain percentage go bad. As a result, you are more likely to be injured or killed by a deer than by a wolf. If you do a little digging with Goggle, you will find that more people are "attacked" every year by deer than by mountain lions and bears, combined.

Javelina attacks are very rare, but as with so many of these animal attack stories, it is likely that the animals were not so much attacking as they were defending themselves from a threat, the woman and her dogs. More than likely, the problem was the dogs that the javelina were defending themselves against, but she went down in the process and sense she was with the dogs (holding them on leash?), she got bitten in the process. She likely was not the focus of the "attack."

With that said, the dogs were just doing what dogs do, more than likely, and barking at the javelina they saw.

In fact, she was walking them on a leash and the javelina went after the dogs. Also turns out that a neighbor had been illegally feeding the javelina.

Hmm. I should be more careful. Last one I shot was at 10 feet away. I was wearing shorts and tennis shoes and there were about 20 around and I had no quick escape path with all the cactus.

I've heard of the putting folks in a tree and keeping them there a while...

I caught baby once and made it squeal hoping some would come back. They didn't.

Had a guy on my lease get his bird dog attacked by some. Ive heard others say if your hog hunting and the dogs start come running back, its time to leave as the dogs are being hunted.

Wow that's crazy especially the post about hog dogs being hunted. I'd have to see that there believe it. I've never hunted them but I've hunted so many ranches were they say the javis were run out of the area from feral hogs. I always kind of felt bad for them since it seems there numbers are dwindling

One of my pups from my first litter a few years ago, got into a fight with a Javi, the cut got infected and they ended up losing him. Had him at the vet immediately but they were told that the saliva in the Javi's mouth was hard to fight from causing an infection.

My aunt and unkle have a ranch near no trees, they have hog and javelina. She says the Javelina are more dangerous on there place.

Thank You

I would not think hog dogs will run from anything. Bird dogs, well...

If you have ever hunted lions or bobcats with hounds in an area where there are javelinas, you know how bad these rascals are. Many times in South Texas, we have had them run dogs off a tree or run dogs back to the pickup. Last year, my dogs were cold trailing a lion between Alpine and Marfa and the javelinas went to them and cut a young dog of mine. He was trying to get away but the javelina ran a tusk in the hollow of his stomach (thank goodness above the guts) and then drove the tusks to the hilt in his rump. The old dogs knew what was up and beat it to the truck and did not get hurt. I am not sure how many javelinas were there but at least 10. They can kill a dog quicker than anything else in Texas.
Adios,
Gary
