I'm not sure of the horsepower of this one but it has served me well for 50 years. I mostly grind chili meat with it anymore.

If your wife has a Kitchen-aid mixer, get the grinding attachment for it. It will grind 20 pounds of semi-frozen meat in a reasonable time.

I've used one of the $55 harbor freight meat grinders for years and it has been great. Ive done multiple 100lb batches and it runs like a champ.

I have the LEM .35 HP #8 unit and I grind about 6 deer a year. It is more than enough

Colt, lots of 20% Harbor Freight coupons around. The $55 model for $44 would be a pretty good deal.

FME if you're not using a grinder much then any of the cheaper ones will work. If you start grinding heavy loads you will learn to hate the cheap ones, and you will upgrade. The biggest enemy of most cheap grinders is not the overheating, it's the constant plugging up due to silver skin/tendons. You can sharpen the blades all you want but they just don't have the torque like the higher HP/commercial grinders. Used to have to constantly stop and clean the 1/3-1/2 HP LEM. Bought the 1 HP Weston Commercial model and holy cow what a difference. Have never stopped once to clean out, it just EATS! The 1 HP LEM may work just as well, I dunno because I've never used one. I sure fell in love with my Weston though. Heavy, well built solid machine.

I'm with skinnerback - if you can justify the cost, go with something bigger.

My MIL gave me the 3/4 HP commercial grinder from cabelas a few years back. I've had zero issues with it, and it's a breeze to clean.

I agree with skinner.

I also have a 1.5 HP cabelas grinder. Its a machine it will grind frozen solid meat and never look back, if it will fit through the mouth it will come out the other side ground.

That said, it is like a $700 grinder or something like that. When we bought ours 10-15 years ago they were about 1/2 that.

If its going to be light/intermittent use I think any number of the counter top models will do what you want.

I use a $129.99 1/2 HP Grinder I bought from Northern Tool. I have used it for 2 years now and never had a problem with it. Plus it has metal gears not plastic like some of the others in this price range.

I've used a KitchenAid mixer with the grinder attachment, and while it's okay for small (~5 Lbs) batches, it's really not so good for much more. Mine is old and probably needs a new cutting blade, but as skinnerback notes the silver skin and ligaments tend to clog it up. I kept lusting for a bigger machine, but then a year and a half ago my hunting buddy bought a small LEM machine at Academy on sale. I think he paid about $80 for it, and it works just fine!

It's relatively new and has sharp blades. As the blades dull it may not work as well, but for now it's more than adequate. I grind semi-frozen meat. I cut the meat into strips while my wife runs it through the grinder, and I can't keep up.

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

every time I have tried to buy something cheap because I could get by with saving money, it almost always bites me in the back side

do some reaseach and don't be afraid to spend a little money for a good grinder
your needs may change someday and you may want to do more with it
if you buy the cheapest, smallest one to get by with, you'll just end up buying another one that will do the job later

I nearly bought the Weston 3/4 hp but went with the LEM Big Bite #12 3/4hp for about $100 less. It's pretty stout. I did a lot of research and most said for anything serious don't buy under 3/4. I suspect for countertop use one of the small ones will do if spends a little extra time on prep. As posted above, silver skin is a #~}}|>€%.
