My '94 likes Rx-7 with 150 grain slugs; recently put together some 170 FPs with Rx-15 and they shoot to same POI. Easy caliber to load for. I also use the Lee FCD on 'em.

Agree it is an easy one to load for and the Lee FCD is very handy. I started loading with the 30-30 with 150gr Speer round nose and 3031 powder. Haven't loaded for it in a while but there are lots of powders that work well for it

150gr seems to be the preferred wt, anyone tried the Speer 130gr hot-cor fn?

Leverroution is the powder to use. It gets highest velocities. Make sure to use a round nose bullet as pointy bullets can set off a primer

I was off the .30-30 for a few years, but inherited a 1946 Model 94 a while back. I ran a powder profile in QL to see what I might like to use with Sierra 170s and AR-Comp showed up near the top so I looked for published data and found none for that powder in .30-30. Using QL I found a fairly mild charge that should be yielding a little over 2100 fps, and I loaded up a few workups. I got outstanding results and surprised myself---I didn't think I'd do worth a flip with iron sights, but I got 3/4 inch at 50 yards. Nice load at 29.8 grains. I'll chronograph it someday, or maybe not!

LE powder and FTX bullets - ANY other combo is just lobbing spitballs, unless you don't care where they hit . . .

Lobbing spitballs can be fun.

A 3030 with LE and FTX is still lobbing spitballs when compared to any modern cartridges.

redchevy, could you run a workup thru QL for me? LEVERevolution and Speer 130gr Hot-cor fn bullet. I have not found any info for this combo. If that powder does' not work then any powder with that particular bullet. Thanks

I hear this LEVERevolution powder is pretty outstanding in the .30-30, unfortunately it's not in the QL database. There are several outstanding powders missing in the program.

I shoot a 150 or 170 over 30 or 29 grains imr 3031, respectively. 1.5" groups out of my Marlin 336CB resting off of the hood of the pickup.

30-30 is a very easy cartridge to load for, and will take care of 95% of all the hunting most people in Texas do.

The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

yeah, but we're talking about a 30-30 here so 'other calibers' don't play into the mix.

however the FTX bullet & LE powder turns the 30-30 INTO a modern cartridge; so much so you get to RETURN about 6" of elevation/drop back to scope/sights at even just 100yrds. VERY handy when the nice buck decides to run away from feeder out to 175 yards as you're pulling your rifle up! ftx is bonded too, so my buck dropped in his trax!

Mine also went from 1.5" groups (with other handloads) to about 0.5" groups at 100yards !! just compare B/C's with other non-ftx bullets; you'll see . . .
