Been using my 6.8 ar for the last 4yrs now and have tried different loads and bullets for it but seem to have to have to many follow up shots to finnish the job and was ready to give up the caliber till last fall and tried one last time with 110 grain hornady varmit loads and shot the biggest buck i have ever taken and it dropped in its tracks. Also the round destroyed him inside. Im wondering if this is a fluke or is it a better round for the slower 6.8 cartridge?

What other loads have you tried? Wouldn't be my first pic, wouldn't recommend it but in reality it will probably work, but I would consider it pretty marginal for the task at hand.

You can probably get away with using them because of the slower velocities, but still not what I'd prefer. I'd just be leery of making a shoulder shot. I'd go for lungs. JMO.

Always liked the caliber and have tried rem core lock but mainly use the hornady because thats what i normally find the most of at the gun stores.Im with u red chevy i thought the varmit load was not that good for deer but it really did the job and have taken a few good size hogs with it also with the same results.

I've shot 10 deer with my 6.8 using the 115gr Federal Fusion. The furthest one ran was 80 yards and none required a follow up shot. I think Chad and some others recommend the 120gr SST.

I will say from the autopsies that it appears the 6.8 is not an overwhelmingly powerful cartridge but it got the job done.

The best varmint load for deer is .223. The lighter the grain the better... hanged

As long as you are getting adequate penetration I don't think it matters what the bullet is labeled. In the 300BLK the 110 V-Max performs more like a SST than a V-max due to the lower speeds. Use what works best for you.

Never had a 6.8 bullet go all the way thru yet but im sure it can. Was impressed with the way it tore up everything inside the buck.

I've shot most of my deer with match ammo. A-max and Sierra Matchkings.

I've seen some varmint loads do great on deer then another bullet out of the same box blow up on the skin. In my 6.8 I like 120 grain hornady sst. My wife killed a monster pig with it and I have let several kids that hunt at our ranch use it on deer. It works great. I think the furthest we've had one run was 60 yards. He was a large buck shot right in the shoulder.

I think the risk you run is getting consistent performance. It might have worked well this time, but next time you might hit a bone and not get adequate penetration. Or, what if a big pig steps out and you try to swat it with that little varmint round. I think you'd be better off with a round designed for the task. Both of my 6.8s like the Fusion ammo

Have tried the soft point ammo and hollow points on deer and hogs with mixed results thats why i tried the other ammo. Like most of yall not really sure on varmit ammo for deer with the 6.8 but i got a new ar 10 for xmas that i can step up too but it sure is heavy compared to the 6.8

Use deer loads for deer
Use the sedan to drive to work
Use the 4x4 on the lease/ranch

Oh I love reading comments about "deer loads". Texas whitetail deer can vary from a 70 pound hill country doe to well over 200 pound south Texas protein monsters. There's no such thing as a "deer load". If you shoot one and it runs off, you need to rethink what you're using. After I got done with my bigger bullets must be better theory and moved to the "appropriate to the size of the game where I hunt theory", I haven't had a deer take so much as one step in 20 years.

6.8 spc isn't a hot round, very mild velocity wise. your thin wall cup and core bullets will probably do better then a partition or bonded bullet
