We've had maybe 10-15 different hunters at our place over the years try to call coyotes but nobody has had success. Foxes will come but not yotes. They are there but I think they've been over-called.

I have a small dog that can be barky/yippy at times. If I took her out there with me and set up with a good wind, do you think they would come investigate her barking?

Most good calls have barking dogs, canine pup distress, ect. You could always try it. Who knows maybe it'll work.

You would have to tie the dog out in front of you otherwise the yote coming in would locate you.

To the coyote a dog is another coyote. I trained and used my older Vizsla as a decoy dog. She was to sit next to me while calling then go out and engage the coyote to bring it in to me. There is not much physical contact, more of a "dancing with wolves" type of thing. With a whistle signal She would come back in and out of the line of fire. Once a coyote has interest in the dog, I could probably have done jumping jacks and the coyote would not notice me. They are both very social and territorial. But to take and tie out a small dog could be dangerous to the dog and could be considered cruelty by some. There is a big difference between using a dog as bait and a trained decoy dog. A small dog like you describe might just get carried off for a meal. You would be better off to talk to them yourself with a Coyote call anyway. If your using an electronic call there are canine and coyote pup distress calls you can use with that. You may have to experiment to find the call that works at your location for the time of year. The magic coyote call on my lease is a recorded fawn bleat mixed with coyote yips on a mouth call. If I am hearing a lot of howls and yodels at night, I match the hatch and throw a couple of same out before a distress calling sequence. If they are being mostly silent, I tone it down with just a yip here and there along with the predator call.

I visited with a hunter that used chickens, he would tie up a sacrifice chicken, then tie one up with a long cord, get set then yank the cord to get the chicken to squawk, sounded like a lot of trouble, but who knows.

I suggested doing this and a few folks around here told me it was illegal....I wanted to just have one in a cage out in a field.
