Since it's the off season and we're all a little bored, let's have a little game. I see pig weights thrown all over the place on this board. Here are three big pigs I've killed in the last couple years, and actually weighed. What's everyone's guess on each? Let's see how good (or not) the THF is at judging pig weights from pics. I'll post the real weights up in a day or so.

Number 1: I'm 6' tall for reference, and that's a full-size Tundra pickup bed:

Number 2: Had to winch him up with the tripod to get him in the buggy bed.

Number 3. Use trap for reference.

What's your guesses folks?

Interesting results so far. All I'll say is pictures can be deceiving, both up and down.

Cool. I assume you mean the bolt action? It's a .22-250. Love it. Extremely accurate, and kills instantly if placed right.

Ha! Well, you are partly right. That first black boar had another boar's tusk broke off in his lower jaw. Bone had obviosuly festered then partly healed. Funky. The second black boar was a real fighter from cam pigs. His ears were shredded in multiple places. But, neither was as ornery as that red boar. He was not happy about being in that trap.

my guesses are in line with everyone else's:
1. 250 ish
2. Over 200 and under 250
3. Over 150 but under 175.

I can't get closer based on the pics. First one is lean and decent sized but not huge. Second one appears short. Third one is lean and appears to be the smallest of them all. But (here comes the hedge) the pics can be misleading since the first we see only dead pics and no idea of the height or thickness of the hog, second we see live pic but no reference to size but he looks short and thick, and third the trap could be a 5x10 or 3x6 trap which would make him bigger or smaller accordingly...but for the last two to fit in the bed of the utv shows they aren't huge and not barrel chested or round since a bed is not much more than a foot deep.

Here are the actual weights:

1) 244 lbs
2) 255 lbs
3) 187 lbs

And the winner is? Texas Buckeye. He was the closest if you take the total he was off on all three. You know your pigs sir up

I thought the results were interesting. Pretty much everyone called the first hog the biggest by a fair margin when he was actually smaller. But, I think that is largely due to the "marketing" in the pics, with him stretched out. He was longer and leaner than the second hog (built more like a domestic boar) but the second boar was far "beefier".

The second boar was built like a brick outhouse. His head was massive. If you look at the pics you can see I'm kneeling right behind him rather than the normal "5 feet back" hog pics. Made him look smaller than he was. That buggy bed is 42" wide, and he hung out of it by a fair bit.

The third boar was also bigger than the trap pic makes him look (unless you knew the height of the trap), and bigger than most people guessed. He was pretty long as well, but not near as thick as #2.

Thanks for playing! Just goes to show pics can be misleading, both ways. And, dead pigs are heavy! Ever try moving 250lb of dead weight? Most people way over-estimate when they are trying to muscle 250lb into the back of a truck. That's why I'm always real skeptical about the 400lb hog claims based just on pics. Without a tape measure across the body, or a weight, it's hard to say for sure.

One thing is for sure though: a true 400 lb pig would be massive. I think I've personally only ever gotten pics of one that would get close to 350. We called him ol' white leg, and he was a beast. Never got him.

TxAg, I have dragged a 305# boar up a 10 foot muddy embankment and out about 100 yards to a truck, with help. Two grown men that aren't weaklings (not saying I am super strong or anything but my buddy I was dragging with isn't a slouch) were groaning and had to go about 15-20 yards and stop. Any uphill required shorter distances. We got our boys on it and it was so funny, they did the "one-two-three-yank" and they didn't even move it an inch and one of the boys actually fell forward as he didn't have a good enough grip and the shock of the recoil sent him flying. Was super funny, especially after hearing them make fun of us straining hard. We were pulling that boar with straps wrapped around the back legs, so it wasn't even like we were pulling on his legs, which is harder than with a handle). Took four grown men to lift it into the bed of a of a truck and it laid in the tailgate where it landed and wasn't going anywhere. I recently had shot a boar and had to get it in my truck by myself. I estimated it to be between 150-175. Was one of the hardest things I have done recently, nearly gave up but one final heft got him up there. Fortunately it wasn't tick covered or anything, unlike the two little ones he was traveling with.

I don't think I am expert guessing hog weights, but I have some experience with them and the dimensions, and can get within a range on most if enough pics are shown. Sometimes it's just dumb luck. Probably the case with your three. I did think that second was thick though. He just appeared too short to go over 200#, but that's where pics are deceiving with no reference (speaking of his alive pic).

You know, guessing the three dimensional weight of an animal from a two dimensional picture is tough. Probably more correctly stated, that without knowing distances, angles, etc., it is just guesswork, at best. You called it marketing, but this happens regardless of the pic. How the hog is presented in the image will greatly influence how people perceive it (whether a live pic or a posed pic).

Pictures don't lie, but they don't tell the truth, either. They are just information.

[quote=TxAg]

I like to use this pic as an example of two pigs that are about 22" inches tall based on the scale in the image. Do you believe they are both the same height? Both are about 2" below the 24" mark on the feeder legs directly behind each one...
