I have a Remington Model 600 in 6mm. How can I tell if it is the Mohawk version?

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

IIRC the Mohawks will have it on the barrel. It has been a while since I owned one.

Been a while since I have held one but I am pretty sure the Mohawk says Mohawk right there on the action.

Just googled some pics and I was correct. The Mohawk will say "Mohawk-600" on the side of the action and the others will say "Remington Model 600".

Thanks for the help? Other than the marking, what is the difference between the two?

Usually the Mohawks have a lower grade stock. Have seen some that have really nice walnut stocks but I suspect they were originaly on a 600 and someone did some swapping. The Mohawk also never left the factory with a vent rib.

I really dig the little 600, mine is a 35 Rem with a Redfield Jr. Scout base that has the rear sight, swing the scope off and you can use open sights. It also has a few other upgrades; aluminum rib, steel trigger guard, and Timney trigger.

Back in the mid '70s I flew out of Corpus Christi for a pipeline patrol company. There was another pilot, a WWII vet, that flew a couple of days a week for the outfit. There was always a 6mm Mohawk sitting, barrel down, in the passenger seat of his truck. He lived on his ranch near the intersection of State 16 and FM 624 in McMullen County. The rifle took a huge amount of big buck deer over the years of that fellows life. Funny how a comment about a rifle triggers a good memory.

Ranch Dog, where did you get the work done on yours? I love my 6mm. My buddies give me s**t for hunting with it, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I did it all by myself. The rib and trigger guard are from Heritage Arms. You would not be able to install a rib on a Mohawk as it does not have the required lugs welded to the barrel. The trigger guard would fit and the reason for it is that a lot of the plastic guards used on these rifles is warped because of the spring pressure acting against cartridge stored in the magazine. This can usually be seen when the magazine is loaded.

Without the rib, a scout mount is not available. What I really wanted was to use an XS Sight Systems Ghost Ring and that only fits the Mohawk, not the 600.

The Timney Trigger is readily available online. If your trigger does not have the "V" stamped on the left side, you should send it back to Remington. The recall is still valid, a fellow I know just sent a 600 back in and the turn time was about two weeks. The trigger on my rifle was broken but I wanted the adjustable Timney so it did not bother me.

I hunt with mine on a regular basis, I took this 7½ year old 8 point on the Chaparral WMA in January with my 35 Rem.

I wish I could find a new rib for mine. The one on it is damaged.

I have two Mohawk 600's. the first is chambered for 222rem (pictured) and is one of the most accurate rifles i own. if I do my part I can cover three shots with a dime. the second one is chambered in 308Win (not pictured)and was my dads main rifle.
