After 2 years of having various issues jump up during deer season which limited our hunting trips my wife, BHB (Best Hunting Buddy & paid hunter), and I were discussing dropping one of our spots or even just giving both up. We've been on the lease for a bunch of years but we would still have other opportunities to get a doe every now & then with other friends. I had even discussed this with the guys on the lease on several occasions starting last summer and they didn't want us to leave.

Fast forward: Lease manager, who is a good friend, calls late in the evening and has good news & bad news.

Good news: Don't have to worry about it anymore.
Bad news: Original surface lease holder who was good friends with the lease manager died.

His wife called inquiring about lease details. Called back next day and said "her" relatives from East Texas had been removed from their lease and she wanted to put them on ours. Our lease manager said there was no way this lease would handle that many people & that we had limited the number of deer taken for years to avoid decimating the deer population.

She called back the next day and said we'd have to give up the lease. Never asked for increase in price nor complained about the lease. She gave us till Aug 1st to vacate. He, I, and the other hunters have agreed that we're leaving absolutely nothing for them to use. All the blinds, feeders, etc will be stored at his place while we look/think about another lease.

Having said that I will say that I may have some blinds & feeders available if the wife and I decide to just give it up. I'm about ready to dedicate more time to fishing anyway.....but I'll still be around to make sarcastic remarks & generate discussion, anger & laughter! up

There's a depressing statement if I ever heard one.

Western has a point. You might go heeled. You don't want to hear "He sure gotta purty mouth, ain't he?" and not be able to do anything about it. grin

Wouldn't surprise me if they where deer hunting the 1st night grin

They had no issue talking the wife into kicking y'all off, doubt they'd have an issue pawning your stuff, or almost as bad, using it!

HnF ... I feel your and hunting buddy's pain on getting that pulled on you. My dad and his hunting buddies had similar done to them with some of the guys being on the lease 35+ years, dad for about 14 years. LO passed, adult kids took over and they had some family friends from east Texas looking for a place to hunt. New LO told my dad's group they had 2 weeks to remove everything upon end of rifle season. At least you have a little time to get stuff packed up and moved (if it's not moved beforehand by new leasees).

Sorry to hear HnF. Thats why I quit leasing yeas ago. Blood, sweat tears and money spent building up a land lords herd just doesn't pay-off in the long run.

As credit adviser said years ago: leasing (hunting) is a bad investment ... Over the years seen many put money time & effort inta leases, only ta loose it ta bigger bucks...
Twas Blessed in the leases were on... Lease than a buck a day, we kept it simple...

Hey,

I'm new to THF and am looking for an annual lease about 2 hours from Fort Worth. I am management and safety minded, and a father to a first time hunter that I'd like to continue making memories with. Please let me know if y'all are interested in helping me find the following:
- deer, hogs, dove
- about 100+ acres (for me)
- family friendly (me and my daughter)
- electrical for a small camper
I'd like to find a lease west/north west of Ft Worth; east of Abilene; south of Wichita Falls.

I know I'm getting in a little late in the game, but any help is appreciated.

Jason - welcome. You may want to move your post to the Land and Leases forum to get more visibility. There are also leases listed there as well.

Sounds like the timing was good if you were thinking about leaving anyway. The last time this happened to me it was the best thing that could of happened. I ended up finding the best lease I have ever hunted on. up
