I have had one on a Bushmaster 308 for about 6 or 7 years. I've shot it out to 600 with the good results. Elevation turret seems to track well. I also have the M223 on a bolt action and have used it on prairie dogs out to about 425 with good results. I wish it was 30mm but all and all I like it.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I do freelance work for Nikon and I like the M-308 4-16 BDC 800 so much I bought 2. Very clear, bright,Nikon's Industry leading No Fault Policy and you can use Spot On to dial it in. I have not had anything but 1 shot stops on over a dozen deer since I got my scopes. Do yourself a favor, mount it upa nd air it out.

I had one mounted on a Savage .308. It had the BDC reticle. As long as I used Federal match 168 grain ammo, the BDC marks were spot on. This is the ONLY Rifle, scope and ammo combination that I have seen the BDC marks actually be accurate. (As you can tell, I am not a fan of BDC.)

JE, When you use Spot On to enter your shooting data are you entering stated MV or actual Chronographed MV ? Did you measure mid bore to mid scope and enter that data as well? I have been using Spot On and BDC scope's for 10 years and I have never had accuracy issues when entering the correct data. I have found that especially when using AR's the stated MV is much higher then what I actually get on my chrono. Out to 300 yards you can still impact a 10 inch gong, but 400+ the more accuarate the data the more accurate the shot. Certainly differnet ammo has different accuracy results as well. My T/C Icon .308 like Winchester 150 gr. BST even more then handloads.

My problem is not with the scope. It's with the marketing. Most hunters are under the impression that they can zero their rifle at 100yds and the scope will "magically" put the circles on the 200, 300, 400, etc yd. marks. This simply cannot happen - there are too many variables. Also most shooters do not understand that this is a second focal plane scope and the BDC marks are HIGHLY dependent on magnification. I have always had create a dope chart.
This one rifle, scope, and ammo combo was an exception to the rule. The BDC marks were truly right on the money up to 600yds. The combo: Rifle - Savage 10FCP 308 Win. Scope - Nikon M308 4-16 BDC Ammo - Federal match 168gr Bonded tip 2700 fps (wasn't my rifle so I never chrono'ed it)
The story behind this is that I got into a discussion with a buddy about BDC scopes. He insisted the his was right on. I told him "I would have to see it to believe it". He said "let's go to the range". he was right.

You are correct that this scope is a SFP scope, by the way, Nikon also makes some very nice FFP scopes too. With a SFP scope as you said, the BDC distances do change when the magnification is changed. As you can see from the below chart that is available on Spot On, turn the magnification downa nd the distances increase and vice-a- versa. I have friends who like to either leave the scope on max magnification or put it on the magnification that is closeest to whole numbers. In this instance it happens to be max power,9X. I don't recall what cal. I took this from but certainly you can have the scope on any magnification with these numbers and make an accuate 200 yard shot.
