I'm looking for an AR .308 compensator. Not a muzzle break, or just a plain flash hider. I'd like one that's effective in decreasing muzzle rise (& suppressing flash) & costs ~$75. I've read tons of reviews on dozens of different ones & it has my head spinning! I wouldn't mind it being a brake too, but don't want the massive sound increase for shooting in a blind, under a roof, etc. Thanks for your input.

Maybe the PWS brake? It's not as severe as a full blown comp, but it does reduce muzzle rise and recoil.

There is a YouTube video that tests the effectiveness of these and the best for your money was the DPMS Miculek break. 3 large ports on the side and 2 on the top. Dad put one on his AR10 and loves it

It's a good break but the OP said he was wanting something that would not increase the noise level too bad...
I have used that Miculek and it's very loud.

That is interesting! Downside is having to buy it AND a brake. ~$150. I'm trying to keep this a simplistic/budget 'build' (I use the word build loosely as I didn't build this & I don't plan on sinking a bunch of money in it. Just fixing the factory failures!).

I've checked this one out but reviews I've read say it's just as loud as all the brakes out there. Too bad because it looks like a good design.

I was really impressed w/my M1A SOCOM 16 muzzle device but it's a proprietary device. It was good @ everything. Low sound, soft 'push' recoil & had almost zero muzzle rise. Damn fine design there.

You can't get a brake/compensator to be effective without it increasing the noise level. It's like saying I want a 1000 horse power car, but want 30 mpg also. So, pick what variable is more important, and go that route. If I am shooting/hunting with a naked barrel or braked rifle, I will ALWAYS wear hearing protection, which I highly recommend doing before shooting in hunting situations. But I hunt suppressed, so it's always quieter.

The be an effective compensator, it will need to be vented on top. All the compensators I've seen were also vented on the side like a traditional muzzle brake, since this will also help reduce felt recoil and minimize muzzle rise to be able to control the weapon better.

I have a different style brake of theirs that I use on my 223 while riding in the truck. It's not nearly as loud as my JP or a Miculek, but it defiantly increases the noise.

If you decide to go with a brake, I'd suggest the AR Stoner from Midway. It's basically the same as an SJC Titan, but half the cost.

I just got off the phone with my dad, he said the best money spent on his AR10 was the limb saver recoil pad and adjustable gas block, said that reduced the felt recoil the most.
