Have two Thomson Pro hunter frames and four barrels, 243, 270, 30-06, and a MGM 338 winmag barrel. Using a Leupold VX-3 on the 338, have a couple Vortex Diamondbacks in 4x12. Use the 243 for varmints most of the time with the Vortex scopes, 360 yards is about the farthest I've gone with it. Thinking about the Zeiss Terra 3X 4-12 and Nikon Pro Staff 3.5x14 for the 243 but have never used either. Not into shooting targets but have recently came across a 6000 acre ranch I have free access to for shooting varmints and hogs, some of the shots on coyotes could be out there about as far as my old eyes can see. Not really wanting to spend $1000 on glass and have a friend that does shoot regularly that recommended the Ziess. For $400 range is the Ziess that much better than the Vortex?

The zeiss terra is not the zeiss of old. Honestly I found it pretty terrible.
I would try to find a used vx3 for your purpose. There is one listed in the classifieds

The Terra is made in Asia, not a real Zeiss. It is not a bad scope but is over-priced in my opinion.

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

The terra is worst in low light conditions when one might need it most

I had a Prostaff 5 3.5-14 and sold it because I really didn't like the BDC reticle. The center crosshairs had a very narrow center area. Prefer more of a wide-duplex set up.

look at a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 sf. It's a mildot scope that has very clear glass and even at highest mag. it is clear. Weight is not bad, 19 oz. Best of all it is very affordable.

for the $400 range you can probably pick up a Vortex Viper 6.5x20. I think I saw on here a week or so ago about a sale going on. May be over by now.
