Hey guys. So, this is a realm I've not ventured into as far as hunting goes. I've got a Barton Quad 400 crossbow, but I want to get into an actual compound bow for public land stalking with a good buddy of mine. Weight is a factor since I'll have to be hauling the stick launcher in and out of the bush in addition to harvested meat potentially. Obviously there's a budget involved, and I'd like to keep it under $500 if I could. I've heard of people getting good deals on 2 yr old "top of the line" decked out systems, and I wouldn't mind going that route if I can find such a deal.
One of my buddies has an entry level Baer hunting setup and likes it, while another has a fully decked out Hoyt. I've seen the Hoyt in action and it's just stupidly precise and accurate.
Looking for some recommendations from more people. Obviously there will be some people who have had bad luck and gotten some lemons, and others who've gotten factory freaks.
*ninja edit* I'm also not looking to get into a trade up scenario. I'd like a bow that I can hold on to for some years and get a good amount of use from.

My advice is to look at the archery talk forum. people are always selling used bows for good prices as they trade in for newer models. All bows are very precise if tuned properly. If the bow is tuned and still not super accurate then it is the shooter's form not the equipment. $500 for everything you will need to hunt is going to be tough though. There really are not any "bad" bows out there. It is all a personal feel as to what works best for you. The best thing is to shoot as many as you can so you can get an idea of what feels and fits best for you.

I know you have a budget, but I can get you in a top of the line HCA bow for much cheaper than other brands flagship models. We can make it a turn key package and I'll even do it on a layaway plan. The HCA is one of the lightest at 3.9lbs bare.

Do you know your draw length? Brand you are looking for? No, but I'll look into measuring it. Probably looking for a Bowtech or Hoyt. Measured middle finger tip to middle finger tip, 71.5", so 28.6" draw length.

I spoke to my buddy with the Hoyt last night. He said he would be wary of buying a used bow without being able to meticulously look it over. Cracks in the limbs, cams, etc. Also told me that a bow should be fitted to the hunter, and the buying process should be like buying a nice suit, taking an hour or two while everything is customized and set up.
I don't mind buying a last years model at all, if it's still new in the box, but now I think I might have a distaste for buying a used bow that I have no idea of its condition (and frankly wouldn't know what to look for).
Also, just some more information, I shot recurve a lot when I was younger and just based on that information he also told me not to look into an entry level bow. That I would tire of its performance fast and want to move on, netting out more money.
So I have a little bit of internal conflict to resolve.

Lots of bows out there, if buying used get it checked out and even then there could be issues not really detectable. The diamond deploy is the bowtech carbon cure and only weighs 3.3lbs. It usually takes about an hour for fitting and setup along with cutting arrows to match you and the bow

I own a small archery shop and am a dealer for HCA. I can get other products also. The Admiral I mentioned was my personal bow, and I am meticulous with my gear. I can guarantee its good to go and wouldn't have an issue with you getting a second opinion if you choose.
Being that you are thinking new, most manufacturers upper end bows are $850 plus bare, I have the HCA Axis at $799 and I'll include a free half dz arrows cut to fit, and it has been super tuned to maximize performance.
Not sure of your location, but if you're anywhere close, my deals are hard to beat.

Sorry I added my location. I'm in N Houston.
Why would you be wanting to sell your personal bow?

I see that someone has already mentioned archerytalk, but another place to go is to www.TexasBowhunter.com. Not to take away from this site, but TBH was developed years ago for bowhunters to interact with each other. Their classifieds section always has bows for sale. You will find that a lot of avid bowhunters want the latest and greatest every year and have the money to buy a new bow every year or two so they will many times sell their "old" bow. I would suggest that you try different bows to see what feels right to you. Before I bought my last bow, which was six or seven years ago, I tried just drawing several before I chose what I got. Sometimes the break over doesn't feel right or the back wall.
