I am pretty set on getting a Choate stock for my Savage 308. I'd like to get a camo paint job on it. Who could do that in the Dallas area for a reasonable price? I don't really know what duracote or cerakote are or if either of these would be an option, but I'm open to anything really if the price is right. I'm not going to be too picky on getting a super high-quality paint job. Just want something other than black. East side of Dallas is preferred.

Get the paint, come to Wolfe City, and I'll show you how I do it, but on your stock. It's pretty quick, pretty durable, and easy to touch up if needed.

What paint? Just krylon?

If you're happy with those colors, that is quite good paint that dries quickly, aiding in layering. It is my favorite of the rattle can variety.

I've done a few stocks and practiced/experimented a bunch over the last year.

Here are some of my latest practices. Instructions below.


1. lightly sand the stock with 220 grit sandpaper; this is VERY important to make sure the paint sticks well

2. wash off and let dry; if it is oily, maybe clean with alcohol

3. tape off barrel channel and action areas

4. I like to spray a primer coat first

5. I then spray a base of the textured or stone paint to give it texture (practice with this stuff because some paint take a heavy coat and some a light to get the right feel)

6. then I spray my main coat

7. while main coat is tacky, I spray with the webbing

8. let dry for a couple days

9. spray with a heavy coat or two of flat clear coat

...and you're done!

Krylon has quit making their webbing (or I just can't find it) and I've started using the below Montana. I like it much better because I can adjust the nozzle to adjust the thickness of the web. Also, it seems much more uniform.

Oh, one more thing I found out: when you spray a clear coat of Flat, the color loses brightness as well. So, I've started using a brighter color to.

Also, PRACTICE on an old stock or a board. Adjust things until you like it. Its a pain to sand it all off and start over if you just run in there willy nilly!

and don't handle it with your bare hands
afterward. use some clean old socks or the
like as gloves to keep the oil on your hands
from getting onto your degreased stock

This guy did 2 bolt actions for me (Cerekote). Looks like he charges $75 for a stock. He is located in Carrollton.
