A big running dog can save you steps rather than costing you an extra step. All pointing dogs need to hunt all the way to the corner. The big runner will go there without you. Same for distant objectives.

Obviously we hunt very different country. I sometimes won't cover much more than 300 yards in a full morning's hunt.
