The buck I killed had very dark horns on camera throughout September and October, disappeared during November and then I connected with him in Decemebr and his horns lost the dark chocolate color that I was hoping for

Being he was in the fog in the pic that makes the antlers always look a lot darker on a wet or damp dark day. Google antler stain(ing) and you will find a lot things to buy or try.

I had other pics of him in better lighting and they are dark. But I understand what you are saying. I did Google it, made my head spin with all the techniques and opinions.

Linseed oil works well. You can use it numerous times to get them as dark as you want.

I have used Minwax stain/poly. sealer combo leaving the tips "ivory" several times. Looks very natural and last about forever.

I love the chocolate brown horns myself. They really look good with a little morning dew on them! Baker

What Mr. Buzz said...
potassium promagdenate.
I'm not sure if that is spelled right.

Check with Lowes or Home Depot if they don't have it they can order it for you. It's used in water softener systems.

Not messing with Mother Nature. In my case I found a pair of dropped antlers from an 11 point muley buck that were bleached out and cracked to some extent. Linseed oil darkened them closer to their original color and after mounting them on a plaque, you can barely tell they are bleached out.
