I returned to Bosque County to hunt an oats field that the farmer would like protected. It was a productive evening for killing hogs, but a bugger for finding them afterwards.

Good excuse to buy a drone. Attach a thermal device to it.

Find your hogs and scan fields at the same time.

I've seen video of hunters scouting fields during daylight with a drone. Who knows, maybe someday we'll see drones with thermal viewers.

Meanwhile, nice shooting DNS!

Hmmm, wife's family has farm land towards San Antonio on which oats are growing. Normally we don't see much hog activity there, too many high traffic roads nearby. All the same, perhaps I should give it a closer look some time soon . . .

Where I am hunting, the oats field is a warren of trails and bedding areas, not to mention all sorts of terracing, low spots, dead spots, a few drainage channels, etc., a lot of which you don't see unless you are right on top of it. No doubt a lot of the trails and bedding areas are from, or are used by deer, but some are definitely hogs as I could see their prints in the soft ground. The oats ranged in height from knee high to waist high, so a lot can get hidden in that. In fact, after I shot that first hog, two piglets came running in my general direction and making a somewhat fast and higher pitch snuffling noise. I have heard the sound before, but could not see the piglets as they passed by me (one maybe 10-15 feet away). All I could see for each was a swath of moving oat stalks about 8-10" wide.
