Hey pig popper did you get that Noreen yet? Man I would love to see pics.

I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

I received it last week - it'll be a month before I get it up and running.

I got a few items to mark off the honey do list before I can concentrate on the fun stuff involving a new to me caliber.

I'll keep you posted

Hunted this weekend with the 30 cal Deep Curls and a buddy who shoots 6.5 Grendel.

All shots were 100+ yards as we overlooked hay fields , some shots 200+ yards.

The Deep Curl is a prolific killer - I'll have to make some calls to figure out if the Federal Fusion is the same bullet although the cost is more on those.

Also the brass and primers are due in this week to continue with the 270 Winchester Noreen project, I hope to have that hunting by September.

Until then the 30 cal and 6mm get the knod !

Fusions and Deep Curls are made using the same plating technology. But the Fusions are boat tails, and the Deep Curls are not. Terminal performance should be pretty similar.

Well, I'm going to bring this thread to a close with a few final remarks.

Firstly, I owe JJH an apology - he was right to be very concerned about the pressure sensitivity of the Deep Curl and while I may not have agreed with his delivery method I am big enough to come back around and say I was mistaken.

I engaged Speer technical support after starting this thread, they have a policy against posting in Internet forums - I respect that. Over the course of a few messages here are the takeaways.

Speer tech maintains that these bullets are in fact pressure sensitive and when I stated that my research into that term doesn't come up in my reloading manual or internet load data (specifically to a projectile alone) he provided me with a logical explanation as to why the Deep Curl is in fact pressure sensitive.

1) The electro-chemical plating process bonds the jacket to the core at the molecular level. This combined with bullet design indicated in technical testing that the bullet is subject to pressure issues with even small variations in powder weight/type.

2) Other bullets (monolithic, copper solids, etc) utilize additional bands to offset pressure - he referred to them as pressure bands and perhaps Federal with their version of the electro-chemically bonded FUSION was able to reduce pressure sensitivity by using a boat tail or other methods. (I currently have an inquiry submitted with Federal on the fusion bullet).

3) Based on the above I went poking around on google and found a decent article on testing pressure in barrels and it delves into piezoelectric testing and methods used to determine # 1 and 2 above. Here is an article that lays it out in terms I can understand http://www.pcb.com/Linked_Documents/Aerospace/AD-BallisticPressureGuide_LowRes.pdf

So based on this information I doubt Speer is going to be bringing back my beloved Deep Curl and perhaps the remaining stock should be purchased by folks with the understanding that you need to be super attentive to pressure signs when using the Deep Curl.

I'm going to continue terrorizing the critter population with my healthy stock of 6mm / 277 / and 30 cal bullets.

I'll start a new thread on the 270 Win Noreen / Deep Curl project as it will serve to inform on long action semi auto rifles and proper loading of the electro-chemical bonded bullet for the designed caliber.

It might have been prudent to have done your research first, before making, shall we say, ill-informed and dangerous comments on a public forum. Live and learn...

I didn't dispense any load data I simply shared my experiences, the bullets work just fine for me.

As to your advisement , well I'll just say that hopefully someday they'll locate that stick which resides in your posterior - troll on , troll on ....

I didn't dispense any load data

but you intended to: "so I will - over time share data"

"zero issues with pressure using these bullets"

telling folks it's quite ok to ignor manufacturer's warnings:"I use conventional load data regardless of the warning in the retail bullet boxes - that was a hindrance for many that was really a lot to do about nothing."

And this is world class stupid for a reloader: "I've got 10 fingers and 10 toes, that's my instrumentation"

Consider yourself fortunate that no one followed your advice.

I did my research before going there - so you're a bit quick to judge

You ever quote me saying that I' m perfect?

Drop it - I gave you an apology and you go high horse on me?

Classy...

not really concerned with being classy...

If you were posting something else dangerous like: " hey it's really cool to let your kids play in the street. They can have a great time. And I'd done it twice and no one got hurt, so you can ignore the warnings from the experts that you should not do it"

I might feel compelled to comment on that, too.

Have a nice day. Hope you grow up.

Federal responded to my inquiry asking if the Fusion bullet was the same as Speers Deepcurls.

They stayed they are the same bullet with a boat tail added.

They did not respond to my inquiry specific to asking if the Fusion was also a pressure sensitive bullet.

It's only speculation to assume that they aren't offered as a component bullet so that Federal can have tighter controls on how they are loaded...

So if you can find pulled Fusion bullets or you want to buy Fusion ammo it should perform to the same level of lethality as I've attempted to relay here with the Deep Curls.

Okay I've got to run and play on the freeway now

Pig popper I doubt he could ever find that stick you were referring to.
Atleast you were man enough to say when you are wrong.

Problem is you corrected the guy he said he was wrong and admitted it. You just can quit beating a dead horse and that sir makes you a prick in my book. Furthermore if people followed the advice that he has all his fingers and toes and that works for me, you get what you pay for.

I have some .338 & .257 DeepCurls that I don't even bother messing with after the pressure issues started being posted. I've heard the dimpled heel base may be a contributing factor. Seems I heard Speer was working a new bullet design. I've have some Hot Cors but I've mainly used Ballistic Tips for hunting. I've killed one deer with a 6.8 Fusion. If I didn't reload and have a stockpile, I would be happy using factory Fusion ammo. They are very reasonably priced and like you've seen with the DeepCurl, have excellent terminal performance.

Thanks Scott for the info - yes Speer indicated they're working on a redesign of the Deep Curl but no estimate on release....
