I find it hard to know when I should shoot a target of opportunity and when I should wait for something better to develop. I had bunches of pics of this sounder congregated under the feeder and by golly that was the shot I was waiting for, but it just wasn't going to happen. I will put together another video showing some of the damage done by the Berger VLD-Hunting bullet. It performed impressively, but as it will be a blood and guts video (some people apparently don't like seeing B&G), I will posted it below with all the appropriate warnings (when it gets done).

I had bunches of pics of this sounder congregated under the feeder and by golly that was the shot I was waiting for, but it just wasn't going to happen. You did the best you could with the second two. Excellent... that you have studied hogs enough to recognize the signs (posture and pace) they often exhibit when things are about to go wrong. Both groups picked up on something they didn't like. Hard to tell if they scented it...or heard it and tried to verify through scent, but when hogs 'lock up', tails go out and noses go up, it isn't good. Time to shoot, because they aren't continuing on or coming back to that spot. Letting the last pair go to the other feeder might have been OK (more video and possibly a better shot presentation), but years of hunting hogs has taught me to 'take the first available shot' when 'spooky' hogs are involved. Rarely, does anything get better by waiting. This often applies to a single animal as well (which will usually be a boar anyway). I say....You Did Good!

Was out last night as well, as just as you said sometimes things don't line up for the perfect opportunities and we just have to take what we get. We trekked about half a mile through knee high wheat to make it over to the only sounder we saw all night, trucking through mud and all the good stuff. We finally get up within 70 yards ready to take the shot and my son fires...click. I didn't lock the bolt far enough back when I unloaded earlier so it never racked a round. I rack it quickly and get a round in there for him, but then the magazine dropped out, not sure if I hit the release in the process or what happened. Either way, sounder is starting to get antsy with the mechanical noise and my son is getting frustrated quickly since he is about to lose the opportunity. the sounder starts moving and I tell him there is a round in there so he fires, meanwhile I am trying to find the mag but being unsuccessful I have to turn on a light. Son said he hit one but it didn't drop, so I grab the mag and slide it in, rack the bolt and get him going again, only too late to fire on the sounder as they have run off. Fortunately, there were two hogs that for whatever reason didn't leave. He took care of those.
Frustrating when a plan doesn't come together, but gratifying to know that even broken plans can have some success. Keep up the good work and the great video work!

Okay, here is the terminal ballistics video. I didn't measure it, but the distance traveled through the body was only about 12" or so. As such, the overpenetration isn't a surprise given that the same round got 20-22" of overpenetration on the previous boar I shot. The tissue damage was very impressive.

So #6 turned into #6,7,8,9,10, &11 ^^^^^^^ Exactly. I played the video back and never heard Brian yell BINGO! But he should have. A pregnant sow is like hitting the jackpot.
