Story Title: Invasive wild pigs nearly wiped out in San Diego County
Source: Los Angeles Times Newspaper

Feral pigs that scientists once feared could pose a serious threat to fragile ecosystems in San Diego County's backcountry have been all but eradicated by government-contracted hunters and years of devastating drought that have slowed breeding.

Officials say it appears only eight wild hogs remain in the county, based on data from hundreds of wildlife-tracking cameras and other forms of monitoring.

Professional hunters working with a consortium of federal, state and local agencies have trapped and euthanized about 150 of the animals over the last five years, some leaders in the effort said.

"The work that has been done through our group has helped quite a bit," said Megan Jennings, a San Diego State University research ecologist in charge of the monitoring program for the Inter-governmental Feral Pig Group. "It's been a real targeted effort, wide-scale across the county, and been a major contributor in getting the numbers down."

30 per year average over 5 years and just 8 left? If just 3 of those 8 are sows, they could maintain killing 30 per year indefinitely.

San Diego County is 4509 square miles. By comparison, Dallas is 909 square miles. San Diego County has mountains, forests, rivers, etc. I would be hard pressed to believe their population estimate is accurate.

In 2010 they had 200-300 in the east county area.

In August 2014, there were an estimated 1000 pigs in the Lake Morena area alone (also east county area)
https://www.kcet.org/redefine/plan-to-deal-with-feral-pigs-in-san-diego-county-approved

So I doubt the estimate of just 8 left, LOL.

That article is fake right? One sounder would be more than 8 and there is no way they can come close to saying that they can verify that all of them are gone. Pigs may have gotten smarter and stopped hitting the spots that they were getting slaughtered at.

The article is not fake. A sounder may have less than 8 hogs. The information is from "hundreds" of game cameras and other sources.

Aside from the depredation hunting that goes on of hogs, unlimited tags issued for hogs in the county, the county did hire professionals to capture and kill hogs as well. They have been working this problem for a while.

Yes they are, or they are deceiving the public, or both.

Considering the description and size of this area I'd be hard pressed to think they could eradicate 142 pigs over a five year period. Like Double Naught Spy said, it would be nigh on impossible to whittle them down to eight. confused2

Someone needs lessons.

San Diego County paid professional guides $2.5 million dollars for the eradication program. $16,666 tax payers money per pig.

Someone needs spanking !

^^^This. Ask me how I know. Better yet, dont. Just gets me seein red again.

I spent countless hours petitionin CA DFW to just allow hunters to pursue them at night. And you know what they did instead? Said sorry, no, and raised the price of a pig tag.

That place can choke on it. Glad I wised up and got out.

I don't think they understand how fast pigs reproduce.
