Last night was on the phone with my dad and he was telling me a buddy of his (they both reload) said they made some .223 loads using a .22lr bullet, and just a primer (no powder). they use the load for plinking. Sounds interesting.. said it worked great and actually the handgun primers seemed to work better. Just wondering if any of yall had tried it or even heard of it?

a 40 gr round with only a primer in a case designed to shoot 55gr rounds? Sounds like a recipe for a squib load and getting things stuck in your barrel...

I have never done it. I believe I have briefly herd someone ask/talk about it before but cant recall.

Primers are more powerful than many think, if you haven't prime and empty case chamber it up and pull the trigger, it is s surprising bang...especially indoors!

Couple that with the fact that 22 LR bullets are slightly smaller in diameter and are a lead bullet, not jacketed and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it worked. You wont catch me doing any time soon though.

If this link is against the rules, my apologies. It's a discussion of the same topic.

Lots of people just need to tinker. "Cat sneeze" loads are popular to do load workup on. I did some workup on 45 LC loads with glueblits. smile Primer the case, cut a 3/4" length of glue stick, press into case. I was trying to kill pigeons in a covered arena without denting or penetrating the tin roof. Got sidetracked and wound up loading compressed loads of BP. grin It would shoot through both sides of an old metal toy car. I know, I could have used a BB gun but wheres the fun in that. I've done some experimenting with 22 pellets in the 223 with primer only. It will kill an opossum.

Back in the heyday of the TV westerns in the 1960s fast draw clubs sprang up all over the country.
My dad was HEAVILY involved in one.
They shot 45 Colts with parafin bullets propelled by a shotgun primer.
I've probably got about 1000 cases he drilled the primer pockets out of to accept the shotgun primers.
They scoot wax bullets along at about 800 fps.

I tried the wax bullet thing, lots of fun and can shoot in the garage. Only problem was a bunch of wax build-up in the barrel. Make sure to clean out all the wax prior to firing a regular pistol round or something bad could happen.
