I've never weighed and sorted brass but am venturing into this for my 6.5 Creed with the following results:

144.9 and less - 4
145.0 - 145.9 - 26
146.0 - 146.9 - 29
147.0 - 147.9 - 36
148.0 - 148.9 - 50
149.0 - 149.9 - 17
greater than 150.0 - 3

This is all Hornady brass that was factory loaded ammo and has been deprimed, cleaned, sized and trimmed. Does this sound like a significant dispersion of weights? I will obviously cull out 7 on the extreme ends and will segregate into 2 groups since I am loading for 2 rifles.

I would welcome input from y'all on the best way to approach this. Thanks in advance.

Why do we care what the brass weighs? An indicator of volume?

Pretty much.

Because I'm not a benchrest shooter, I don't worry about brass weights. I'm able to get excellent results just making sure that my brass is all from the same manufacturer and trimmed to the same length.

If you're a benchrest shooter, just pick the brass weights within a couple of grains that you have the most of and then only use that in the future. But it's probably not going to make much of a difference.

^^^^ yep

I don't know how much of a difference it makes but thought I'd try just to improve consistency.

Working your trigger is a good way to tighten your groups.

BF,If your quest is shooting one hole groups all the time, then knock yourself out weighing brass, weighing bullets, measuring the ogive of your bullets, etc.
You can drive yourself crazy doing all of that stuff, and really not gain much accuracy over just loading and shooting ammo that has the same +/- .01 grain of powder charge.

It seems logical that the heavier cases would have less capacity, but is that really so? If I was going to segregate brass, I'd home in on case capacity...but if I went that far I know I'd then check the weight of each case to find out whether a weight:volume correlation really DOES exist.

I've not bought into the whole case weighing deal. I will say that capacity makes a bigger difference and if the head stamp is a little thicker does it really effect performance? I believe the answer is no...which is exactly why I never have done it.

I will say that I've kept track of brass and there are some pieces that just don't shoot with the others. Rather than try and keep up with which ones are which...I toss them. Which is why I start every barrel with 100 new pieces of brass but by the time all is said and done...I have around 90, my barrel life is ~ 1100 rounds.

Now weighing primers...I've read enough to believe that if I was shooting long range (> 500m) a lot, I would weigh primers...I don't think up close it makes a hill of beans difference but at 1000 it will.

Judd - like many, I've seen plenty of talk about weighing cases but weighing primers is new to me. Thanks to you I now have more reading to do. Certainly not for me but I'm the curious type.

Weighing primers is something fairly new that the short range benchrest guys don't mess with but the long range guys do. It makes sense, it is the one thing we don't have a whole lot of control over but can and does create ES/SD issues. Don't believe me try different brand primers.

Quit worrying about that chit, go shoot more, and learn to read wind.

We went 1575 yards today, and neither of us had weighed a single piece of brass.

Since we know the OD of the case must fit within a certain geometry (the chamber), the more mass the case has, the less volume there will be internally.

When I'm sorting brass (my lapua for 6.5 grendel) I usually sort in .5 gr packs. Most of my lapua brass falls in 2 of these mass ranges.

As I said, it's a supposition. As reasonable a belief as it is, we don't KNOW until we make sure we know.

There are many [quite reasonable] things we believe, a few things that we KNOW, and a vast gulf between the two.

It really is just a basic physics logical conclusion. Not really as out there as a "belief" would be. 2 masses cannot occupy the same space, therefore.....

I used to get all anal about weighing brass. Then, one day, I had to throw together some 243 loads to head out to the range with a friend. Shot sub-.8" or so groups all day with the 'thrown-together' loads.
When I got home and looked, I'd loaded all of that with different brands of brass.

I've never worried about brass weights again. I do keep track of round counts on each type of brass and keep the loads to one brand though.

That is purty funny right there! cheers

Weighing primers is a new idea...just what I needed...one more variable...thanks Judd! bang

Yep JG, I know I need to just shoot more...my little brain is always searching for a better mouse trap. I will head out to shoot this weekend if the range is not flooded.

I think I'll go shoot this afternoon. Seems I have way more time than ammo these days.

I find weighing/sorting brass, cleaning out primer pockets, and tumbling brass to be a waste of time.

Another forum I post on had a poster asking a question about whether the pressure of the air within the case would affect the consistency of the ammo.

I suggested that he load in a glove box to make sure the humidity from his breath wouldn't affect the burn rate of his powder.

You guys must have a ton of time on your hands if you are going this deep into it.

Two reasons that is not correct:

The composition of the brass use can vary, and you do not know the exact dimensions of the extractor groove.

Until you verify that weight is a reliable indicator of volume, then you do NOT KNOW it to be true.
