I've never really grasped how to pick the perfect arrow. So I'm looking for a good rule of thumb to stick by for my setup. My set up is a Mathews halon 6 30" draw with the limb driver rest. I'm shooting 488 grain total right now and it's chronoing at 286fps. Im wondering if there is a happy median of kinetic energy and speed. It's all in correlation I'm sure but I feel like I'm a little over kill on weight right now. My arrows are 31" I'm sure with the limb driver rest I can cut off a inch but the mats only going to be 10grains. I'm currently shooting gold tip name the game 10.9 grains per inch and straightness .006 and 300

that would help if you cut an inch off. You'll gain a couple fps. At the speeds you're shooting, you'll do just fine. That Halon is a quick bow. You aren't pulling 70# are you? I'm kinda a speed guy. Shot a Monster for years and then switched to an Xpedtion Xcentric. A tad slower than my monster but still shooting a 470 gr arrow in the 315's fps.

What are you hunting? Or are you just doing 3D or target? Since you're just looking for a quick reference or rule of thumb, there are tons of charts (each manufacturer has one) that you can look across and down and come up with a decent and respectable arrow choice.

Outside of the GT arrows, I don't see much wrong with your set up. You can always cut a little off/ Personally, I would.
*note bout my GT comment...I hate them. They work for some guys but I shot them once and I will never shoot them again.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

Victory vap v3. It is straight and strong. I've heard nothing but great things bout the VAPs. Haven't shot them yet. I'm stuck on my carbon express maximas.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

Yes it's set at 70#. I feel pretty good bout my numbers shooting such a heavy grain set up. I've learned that the "ibo" speeds are only true in there high tech labs with no accessories and 350 grain set up. I shot a 440 grain set up at 316fps but after doing the math on the Kenetic energy my original 488 grain arrow kinda won me over. I wasn't sure if there was a "perfect" number between FPS and the Kenetic energy.

I'm currently shooting gold tip name the game 10.9 grains per inch and straightness .006 and 300 I have two set ups 501 and 405gr. Both high FOC. I'm little more consistent past 50yards with the 501 grs. via fixed heads. Probably has more to do with slowing it down to 285 and little more wind resistance. My 405gr I use for any thing and every thing in Texas. I've had pass tru on every thing I have killed with this set up including elk. But my favorite mechanical broadheaf got discontinued and any fix over 300 feet a second I'm just not as consistent at longer distances and I hunt a lot out west. I shoot black eagle deep impacts and rampages. Not a fan of aluminum skinned or core arrows after seeing a guy fall and bend a couple. In other words going lighter won't hurt you nor will staying the same.

If they're shooting good I wouldn't mess with them. That's a good speed and weight to me and it will get louder if you go a good amount lighter.

Have you chronoed that yet or just used an archery calculator online to get speed? My Xcentric doesn't get good speeds until I go quite heavy with arrows. 434gr shoots equivalent of 338ibo but over 700gr shoots equivalent of around 370ibo.. Seems much more efficient the heavier I get
