I'm about to purchase an old RV that is currently sitting at the lease I'm on. The current owner only have a bill of sale from the previous owner and no title. I'll be given a bill of sale from the current owner. I'm thinking when I need to sell it, I'll also give a bill of sale.

Anything I should be concern about doing it this way? The RV will probably never leave the hunting property.

Unless you are taking it somewhere I doubt it.....

I wouldn't worry about it. If you do have to move it, you can get a temporary tag to get you where you need to go. Neither of the trailers at my lease came with titles.

Get a bonded title for it.

if it's not leaving the property, no issue ... even if you want to move it, as stated, temporary permit ... sell to someone else, bill of sale and they worry with the temporary permit.

but ... I sold one with a title (title was in my father's name but my father had passed, so my mother signed the title) to someone along with a bill of sale and the signed title. They never re-titled as it was going to a deer lease, 3-4 years later I get a phone call from someone else stated they had bought it asking about getting the title transferred into their name but since my mother had signed it, they needed proof of death of my father and proof my mother had power of attorney following his death. It was a PITB! ... the moral to this is your name is on the bill of sale and you might receive a call some day asking about the title.

You were nicer than I would have been, I would have told them you couldn't and more importantly wouldn't help them and that they should contact who sold it to them.

yep, I'm usually pretty good guy until someone gets anal on me ... this guy was pretty nice in asking, so I followed thru. Just the way I was raised.

I had an old Airstream that went from lease to lease with me for more than 25 years. I had a bill of sale, but no title, so it never had a license plate. When I finally decided to sell it, I needed a title. During that process, here in Texas, at the courthouse, I found that I owed a significant penalty for not having titled it in all those years. With a little fast talking and pleading ignorance, the lady doing the paperwork cut me some slack and I paid a small penalty.

In case one of you says I didn't have to title it, the sale was predicated on it being titled. The new owners were going to have it restored and take it all over the Country. And the really good news is that I sold that old Airstream for way more than I paid for it, so I didn't want to lose that sale.

I'd be curious to figure out what steps you went through to do it. I was having difficulty with a boat trailer recently and it was impossible to get a "bonded title" because they don't issue them to trailers under a certain weight. Finally tracked down the guy that sold it to me years later and filled out the transfer info. Still curious how you got all that worked out if you don't mind.

On certain trailers you can file for a "Home Built" title. Lost the title to my trailer, 6x12, got what I said.

Rex, the Airstream title was pretty easy to do at the courthouse, once I found the right person to talk to. As for a boat trailer, I really did have problems getting a title for mine. A buddy made it in Louisiana and brought it to Texas and later sold it to me. When I decided to sell the boat and trailer, that's when I realized that I needed a trailer title. I struggled to find some way to do it. Made some calls to various agencies and got no help. Finally I called the department in Waco that would handle titles, and the phone was answered by a woman. I explained my problem and it was apparent that I had found the right person. She had me bring the bill of sale, pictures of the trailer, and my checkbook. I pled ignorant and deserving of sympathy and she walked me through the process. I think, from my experience, that it's important to find someone willing to listen and help, and people like that aren't easy to find in government service.

As silly as it may sound, I think Mondays and Fridays are not good days to get help. Probably Wednesday or Thursday (after hump day) are happier days to get some service.
