Picked up this cool old advertising poster from 1912 that shows a slice of what it was like to bird hunt in the "old days". I really enjoy looking at these old advertisements and dreaming about what hunting was like back then. Notice the dog - setters and spaniels were the most common dogs of choice back then.

Went to the big Wanenmacher Gun Show in Tulsa this past weekend with my buddy Toepuncher. They have everything in the world up there. 11 solid acres of tables. If you've never been it's definitely worth the trip. Like a giant museum of cool guns and hunting related stuff.

Here's another one I couldn't resist:

You must have wanted it bad to go to Tulsa. Definitely worth it though, I love that stuff. I'll bet you paid a premium for this stuff.

I really went just to check it all out. Pretty much decided never to go to another gun show again except for that one since it has so much to offer. Certainly didn't steal anything but the prices are better than any other show I've been to because there are so many dealers competing with one another. I'm pretty familiar with the market on stuff I'm interested in.

For example, on the top poster after a round or two of back and forth I paid what amounted to about 40% off what he had on it. Having cash was the key. I've seen that poster go for even more than what he had on it at auction.

The guns I bought were at or below Blue Book. Again, not steals, but not bad deals either. The market is much more "fluid" for advertising pieces.

As always, the keys are to: 1)have cash and 2)negotiate. Usually can get some good deals that way - especially if you are buying more than one item.

Also, I waited until Sunday to do my buying. That's always a risk, but one I'm usually willing to take. I did lose out on buying one gun I wanted (guy actually bought it Sunday as I was walking up to the table to make an offer).

I also learned a lot from guys willing to share their knowledge about their areas of expertise.

There were a few old grumps there who were really just there to trade with other dealers and had their stuff priced way too high - but you just move on when you run into those guys.

It was really a cool experience. I'll be going back at least every other year.

Looks like trigger finger in next to trigger guard as his hand is on the top of the grip and not to the side.....and looks like he is opening the action or at least looking at the mfg/model info.....can't see where the muzzle is pointing.....could be open sky......

I have since learned the dog is a Llewellen Setter - a very specific breed from the English Setter family. They are still used today, but were much more popular back in the day.
