Someone please tell me the advantage/disadvantages of the 2 calibers. I am considering purchasing a 280 and I am not a fan of wildcats. Thanks

280 AI offers close to 7 mag velocities with 10gr less powder. Factory ammo isn't overly cheap but it is available as is the option of running plain 280 out of it.

It's a decent round that gets you about 75 fps over the standard 280 round. Nosler makes good brass for it. It's a little expensive at first, but once you have the brass, you should be able to reload it multiple time. I've loaded a lot of 280 AI with many different bullets for load work ups.

The AI offers advantages like a little better velocity potential and possibly longer case life with a little less case stretching, and therefore maybe less case trimming. You can fire standard .280 ammo in it also, but of course you're better off with brass already formed to AI. Factory AI ammo is available but not ubiquitous. Then again, neither is standard .280 ammo.
If you're a handloader, the AI has a lot going for it.

Ask "Red Snake" how he's liking his .280 A.I. shooting a 168 gr Berger VLD.

Plain old .280 ain't bad either! Of course. Reckon the ES and SD are a bit lower on the A.I. variety?

How close does it get to 7 mag? Probably about as close as 308 gets to 30-06?

Does a 280AI need a 26" barrel to get close to 7mm rem mag velocities? Most rifles in 280 rem only have 22-24" barrels.

Ask "Red Snake" how he's liking his .280 A.I. shooting a 168 gr Berger VLD. Yep! Zero regrets on the .280ai I'm getting 2800 fps with 168 Berger VLD "handloads" I bought from hendershots.net out of Georgia (their ammo ain't cheap though) with 1/4 MOA accuracy. I think the extra 75-100 fps increase over the .280 is necessary to push the 168 to the distances I want. It loves factory Nolser 140 ABs (3000+ fps) and 160 Partitions too. I've got a brake on it (and just got my Thunderbeast Ultra 7 can this week) and felt recoil is so benign compared to the 7 RM. Gonna start reloading this spring and work up some 168 VLDs as these are just devastating on game. 375 yd Axis - DRT 250 yd Axis - DRT 350 yd Hog - DRT 250 yd WT - DRT

Nothing wrong with either caliber, thought I prefer standard .280 and having a 7mm Rem Mag rather than just splitting the difference with the .280 AI.

I have the standard 280 Rem and mine has a 23.5 inch barrel with a 1/8.5 inch twist.I have played around with the 180 gr Berger in mine but settled on the 168classic hunters. No problem pushing 2850-2900 with a couple of different powders. It's been my elk rifle of choice the past two years and of Five elk none made more than 15 yards. I have shot it to 800 yards on steel just practicing prior to hunting and it performs well for a hunting weight rifle.
