We bought our property near Dime Box about a year ago and have had a lot of fun hog hunting on it. I had my brother out once during deer season but we didn't shoot anything and didn't see any hogs. He has never hunted or killed anything other than insects, so I really wanted to share the experience with him.

There has been LOTS of hog activity on the cameras in the last month or so, so I'm thinking the timing is perfect. Last weekend we went out Sat morning and hid out near the feeder for an hour or so, then moved to another spot hogs frequent but didn't see anything. He's using my lever action 30/30 with a scope and I have my AR 300BO with green dot. Around lunch time we decided to fill the hog tube with corn (it had been empty for a few weeks but the feeder nearby is throwing corn) then eat some lunch. We fill the tube up, and head back to the trailer. While eating lunch, the driveway motion sensor goes off (trailer is about 400' from the feeder). We grab the guns and head back. Sure enough, about 8 hogs at the feeder. I whisper the routine to him again, safety off, count down 1, 2, 3 and shoot on 3, shoot one on the same side as you are standing... He counts down but doesn't shoot. A few seconds later I hear the blast, and quickly pull my trigger, safety on... damn...I was so worried about him taking the safety off, I forgot about mine. I fumble to turn off my safety thinking there's no chance for me to take a shot, but the hogs did something they have never done before, ran about 20' and stopped and looked around, bam, bam, bam.... I couldn't believe they gave me a second chance. We ran toward the feeder and I saw the one I thought I had shot squirming around and put a bullet in his head. We heard a wounded hog towards the back of the property where it is very thick, and looked for about an hour but never found him. At this point, we're thinking we have one hog and there's confusion about who shot it. When walking back to the feeder, my brother noticed a blood puddle under the feeder and a heavy blood trail. Awesome, that would have been his shot! We start to follow the trail which goes off to the side, and soon see a dead hog just a few feet away in the shadow of a tree. He died so fast that he was quiet when we ran by and we didn't see him. It's amazing how the mind works with the adrenaline flowing. You can't always remember all the details or think about your decisions as much as you would like to. Sortof like the fog of war I guess.

In another first, the motion sensor went off again that afternoon, and the next day when another group of hogs came to the feeder (cell phone pic below) Normally they are gone for weeks after shots are fired. I went back with the AR, but didn't feel like cleaning another pig.

I'm a big believer in the hog tube now!

It was an awesome weekend with great weather.

Nice going.

I hunt in Lee County also, and the hogs have been pretty thick the past few years.

Keep after 'em!

Thanks for the comments. We've taken 10 hogs in one year. It's funny, I feel like the hogs are the best parts of owning the property, so unlike many other land owners, I'm not out to eradicate them or eliminate sounders, I want to feed them and keep them around so we can harvest a them on a regular basis, year round. Our place is mostly wooded and they don't seem to do much if any damage so not a nuisance really to us.
