I live in Houston and am going to be hunting a small tract in Rusk county this fall. I have been debating on laying a plot during the summer and early fall to try and up traffic through the property. With all this being said, where do you buy the seed? Do most feed stores carry it?

I would talk to multiple feed stores around the property you hunt and get an idea of what works best in the area. Some sell seed, others don't.

Like Rickym said. I get mine from the local feed store. They know what works best in your area.

Local seed store or order from Turner Seed Company, Tell Turner where you are at and they will make a good recommendation for seed for your plot.

M-G in Weimer carries a lot of seeds but might have to call to check what they have also.

I'm using Turner. Check with your NRCS division for that area - they will tell you what works best in your area's soil conditions. You should also get a soil sample done: http://soiltesting.tamu.eduBoth resources have helped us tremendously.

What works best for you in Rusk? This is going to be my first year hunting in East Texas. I grew up hunting down in Webb and Mcmullen.

If you have never planted this piece of land before, I would focus on improving the soil now and planting in the fall. It will take several months for lime and fertilizer to work. Get a soil sample tested and find out what you need to add to it to grow your crops.
Summer food plots burn up once the heat gets here. Right now there is so much growing for them that it's almost a waste of time doing a spring food plot. The better you get your soil now, the better your plants will grow in the fall, and the better your chances will be once the acorns run out. Acorns are you biggest enemy. Once they start falling, the deer will disappear from your food plot

I agree, won't be doing any planting until fall, just want to get a head start on the knowledge.

I am the ITR for Tecomate here in Texas and would be glad to help you out. You can email me from my signature below and we can find a food plot seed that would best fit your needs and your property.
Also, I'm not just your average sales guy. I have a degree in horticulture and have spent many years growing plots and crops in Texas so I can help you grow the best plot possible for what your trying to accomplish. Even if you don't buy from me id be happy to answer any questions you have.

I am going to call some of the small feed stores I passed in garrison and see what/if they sell any seed to hunters. Thanks for all of the advice, I will post updates as I get further into this adventure.
