I'm gonna open this big o can of worms for all to opinionate.

With EVERYONE buying a gun now, getting their LTC.

Should there being a MANDATORY training "test" required to shoot a handgun???

Just like we have to take to drive a car???? Have I gone to far LEFT with this one?

Every time, I go to the range now, I have to keep a revolving head to make sure some gun newbie is not covering me with his shiney new Glock (of course Glock because that's what someone told him to get). hammer

I took my CHL test at an outdoor range. Several of us would shoot at once, and there were no barriers between us. The guy to my left was so bad, that he shot the bottom left corner of MY TARGET, which was 8 feet or so from his target...he passed the course and got his CHL.

Hate to say it but not just handguns. Some people just shouldn't ever handle a gun. Just like some people shouldn't be allowed to drive.

At least they're at the range, gotta' give 'em an "E" for effort. Lots of folks take the class with a gun borrowed from the instructor, qualify, and never see a range again. I doubt any of us were born with a 1911 in our hand. I say no. Driving is a privelege. Bearing arms is a right.

edited to add: At my range, at least, I have no problem shouting out something like "Whoa Whoa Whoa Cowboy!!! You might consider keeping that thing pointed THAT way!" Remember, on a range ANYONE can call a safety cease fire.

I don't know if a test is the answer, but there should be some minimum required practice and proficiency if a person is going to be shooting safely. I have two SiL's. One will not shoot a pistol or rifle, though he's Ok if his wife or my grandkids shoot (and they do). The other SiL just bought himself a small Ruger 9mm, and he is really an awful shot. Really really bad. I always spend some time with all family shooters and a whiteboard, showing proper sight alignment. Most folks, young and old, pick up on it quickly. But not everyone does. That oldest SiL just isn't a born shooter. He isn't unsafe in his pistol handling, and...if he was trying to shoot you, you'd be pretty safe too.

Ah, but the oldest granddaughter...she can shoot. Better with the Python, but still good with the Beretta.

The Constitution says the right to bear arms shall not be infringed and doesn't say anything about, unless you don't pass a test.

The CHL class isn't a gun class, it's a law class. At the end, they just want to make sure you know which end the bullets come out of to avoid liability on their part.

I'm not for requiring tests for anything (including hunters safety) but it isn't a bad idea either. After taking hunters safety, even though I had hunted for years I still learned things. Maybe just put a little more emphasis into gun safety in the CHL class as a compromise? I know they spoke alot about it in my CHL class. Made people load and point and shoot a target with a dummy gun just to make sure people at least had an idea of how to handle a weapon.

What about this.. Should the proficiency test for LTC be more difficult?

My wife & I took our class this past Saturday.. She shot a 249 & I scored a 247.. There were a couple of folks in class that were spraying the silhouette @ 3 yds...

Is there some exaggeration here? How can you spray a silhouette at 3 yards? I'm pretty sure I could close my eyes point and shoot and all bullets would be somewhat close together at 3 yards....

It all begins with the government telling you to take a class before you can shoot and next thing you know the government is in your bunk on the lease taking things that are yours and making them theirs.

No, we don't need a required class to shoot a handgun. We need less government regulations not more.

Dead serious.. Instructor stopped the test & we waited while he spent a little time w/ her.. He said later that she was leaning back w/ her arms straight (locked at the elbows) & "several other technique problems, including a terrible grip"..

She was on the other end of the line from me & my wife so I could see her target but not her..
