Having a debate at work. My boss who has his concealed and me who is waiting on the plastic to get here... He doesn't carry one in the chamber, I would think it makes the most sense to carry one in the chamber. What do yall say?

I don't carry one in the chamber. 10 years of CHL, never have, never will. I live my life based on probabilities. The probability of me ever needing to use my CCW is much, much, much lower than the probability of an AD. Never had to use my CCW, never had an AD, would like to avoid both. I focus my efforts on not putting myself in situations where my CCW is needed.
I'm sure there will be plenty of folks come along that say carrying an unloaded pistol isn't worth carrying at all. That's a tired argument.

Proper and competent handling of the firearm goes a long way toward avoiding an AD.
If you're going to carry with an empty chamber, then you need to drill religiously to make sure you'll actually rack the slide when the chips are down. I know many think they're always going to be calm, cool, and collected under stress, but there's a reason professionals train hard. This is one of the reasons for Glock and similar actions---you'll pretty much always pull the trigger when needed, but things like disengaging safeties and racking slides are NOT the things you'll do automatically unless you've actually trained with real zeal. Probably 98% are best off with something like a Glock or an XD with a round in the chamber.

I carry one in the chamber but won't fault anyone who doesn't feel comfortable doing so. I assume I'll have the freedom to use both hands should God forbid the need arises to draw my weapon, but who knows? The only handgun I would ever consider carrying without a round "in battery" for lack of a better phrase, is a double action revover. I carry a J-Frame 'Smith quite a bit, and doing so would further limit the capacity from five to to four, and I don't want any part of that. Just me, though.

If you want to carry an unloaded gun for protection you might as well carry a damn rock in your pocket. Bad guy isn't going to give you time to draw and rack your slide before he kills you. If a person can cover 21ft with a knife before most people can even draw their weapons from concealment what do you think is going to happen during that extra second or two it takes you rack one in the chamber? Hint: It's not going to be good.
I carry a G27 with one in the chamber every day, keep your damn fingers out of the trigger guard and you'll be fine. Be mindful if you're drawing your gun and re-holstering, make sure your shirt isn't balled up and sticking through the trigger guard. All easy things to do if you're just mindful.

I can't say I would carry unloaded. When you need it most chances are good you won't have time to rack a round before it's too late. If you are worried about it going off maybe carry something with a safety. Much faster to get ready to go in my opinion.

If they passed a law tomorrow that you could only CCW with an unchambered weapon, would you leave your gun at home and replace it with a rock in your pocket? Should I also consider only carrying fixed blade knives since an automatic folder would take too much time to flip open?

I would never CCW without a round in the chamber. That being said, if I did, I would spend xtra time at the range practicing drawing and racking slide off of a sturdy belt, kneeling and racking off of back of shoe, etc. in case of the time comes and my other hand is busy, I could make the gun work.

It makes ZERO sense to carry a pistol with no round in the chamber. With proper training, that is the way to go.

I spotted a trend in that thread. Not one single handgun was in a proper holster minding its own business when it went off.

If you aren't confident enough with your capabilities to carry one in the pope don't. It doesn't affect the way I carry.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I carry loaded (pistol). My home defense weapon is loaded (revolver). My "vehicle" defense weapons are primed, but nothing chambered (bullpup shotgun and pistol), as I feel that I may have enough response time in a vehicular scenario to react to a threat. My vehicles are always locked down and windows rolled up to provide me with a first line of defense.

Had to think about this for a second or two, but I believe it's up to the individual to make sure his gun is safe. This goes in my pocket every day and is next to me on the end table as I type this. I try to make it a point to ALWAYS physically check the safety every time I pick it up, even when its in my pocket, I double check all day long the safety is still engaged. I damn sure don't want a 95gr XTP through my leg

I keep a round in the chamber. If I need to handle the gun out of the holster, I unload it at that time. I don't worry about ADs much while the gun is in a holster.

It makes ZERO sense to carry a pistol with no round in the chamber. With proper training, that is the way to go. I think you nailed it right there Chad. How many of us in this forum are properly trained? We all shoot at the range and went thru the CHL class/renewal, but let's face it....that ain't training. The lady "qualifying" in my renewal class had no business carrying a gun. Nearly put a new hole in me and the instructor. Scares the crap out of me that she's out there somewhere toting a revolver in her purse.

I either carry a P938, Officer's 1911, or CZ 75 clone. I always carry in a holster, always in condition 1.

Someone recently said carrying an unloaded gun is like trying to play football with a baseball bat.

I carry in condition 1 and i've never had an AD. I responded in that thread and while i've never had an AD i've seen people rack their slide with their finger on the trigger before.

Sounds like you are adding more chances of an AD. Keep your booger picker off the bang switch and there will be no AD! It's really not that hard guys. And why would you want to carry a gun if it's not loaded? Ever here of Murphys Law? The time you need it to work, that time where you have to draw the weapon rack the slide, that's betting on a 50/50 chance of it working correctly. That's also betting on it malfunctioning probably from user error because you are hyped up and loosing basic motor functions. Have it in the ready or don't carry it. Chances are you will never need it, but wouldn't you want it to be ready when you do?

My carry weapon is always loaded.
For those who carry with an empty chamber it might be better to carry a weapon with a manual safety. It would be faster to draw, disengage the safety and fire than needing to draw and rack the slide.

I always carry with one in the chamber. Key is to have a nice holster that blocks the trigger. If it has a safety, all the better. I carry my LCP with 1 chambered (no safety) with a desantis pocket holster.
In my experience, when dealing with a threat one hand is easily occupied. I call it the "get off me" hand.

You're assuming your other hand will be available to rack the slide when needed. If you are carrying concealed the weapon remains in your holster and isn't going to discharge by itself.
