So, the topic in the Open Hunting section got me to thinking about effective range for a 22. As I mentioned in the other thread, just for a hoot 3 of my buddies and myself tried to stretch our 22's the other day. One guy had a Savage TR with a 6-24 PST and a 20 MOA rail and I had my Ruger 77/22 with a 1 inch competition air rifle scope (don't laugh it works great). The other two guys had random bolt actions with standard 1 inch scopes. At 300 yards both myself and the guy with the TR were able to dial in and hit the 16 inch steel gong 100 percent. And both of us ran out of adjustment before we could dial in at 400. He had the MOA reticle and was able to reduce power and get on target using the reticle marks, but my scope was a thin duplex and I struggled with the Kentucky windage at 400.

So my question is, has anyone ever shot .22's at 400 yards and beyond, and what setup did you use?

BTW - This was A LOT of fun and a nice change of pace to get away from the .308 and 6.5 routine.

A friend on another forum shoots 400 yards with his .22lr. He uses a Savage FV-SR. He uses a 60 yd zero and has to account for 80 MOA drop at 400 yards. Between his base and his scope, he is maxed out at 90 MOA up.

I have a Savage FV-SR and have shot 350 yards. I could have dialed it in on the scope but just decided to use the marks on the cross hairs and then aim higher/lower to hit the target. I have a 20 MOA rail, Boyd's stock, Mueller scope, and a Spectre II suppressor. The scope is cheap but it works really well.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

I've gone 300 yards, but have not tried 400. I may try to find a 20 MOA pic rail for my .22 and just move one of my centerfire MIL/ MIL rifle scopes over.

I just put in a new rifle range at my place. I have 267 yds. I was banging steel with the 223, 308 and 06 and thought why not with the 22lr. It took a minute with the 4x scope but I was able to walk it in. Seems like about 10-12 ft of holdover. I wish I had a longer range but it is what it is.

IIRC, there's about 13' of drop at 300, so you'd be about right. I have shot to 300 but I was just holding over. I could hit an IHMSA ram fairly consistently.
