I might be going on a turkey hunt with a guy I know up in Michigan in May. The problem is I haven't been since I was 10 years old. I am pretty good with a mouth call but do y'all have any tips on what to do and what not to do?

I have hunted turkeys in a dozen different states and for the most part a turkey is a turkey, great eye sight, tremendous ability to hear and as the old saying goes if they could smell you would probably never get one.
I am from Michigan but now live in Texas and you work and call an Eastern bird pretty much just like you would a Rio.
My only advice, don't wear orange.

Get a good box call and watch a couple of youtube videos, they're almost idiot-proof. I proved it this weekend with my first hunt calling.

Have never hunted Michigan but when working there in 99 did go and call for a coworker. Got his Tom early in the AM first day. Biggest differences I have noticed between Eastern Turkey and Rio Grande Turkey

Rios are usually more vocal

The other part is habitat related Eastern birds have plenty of large trees to roost in so they will usually be much more spread out on the roost locations. If available they will roost in trees over water, have seen Rios do that though but it is less available for them.

Same calls work, turkeys sound the same to an extent, each can have their own sound but cadence is the same be they Eastern or Rio. Take several calls if you have them, sometimes gobblers will respond better to one call than another.
