Okay so I have a question. I know that all hunt tests use dead ducks for retrieving. I introduced Buck to birds when he was younger (during duck season) and we worked on marks and steadying, and again during force fetch for a brief period. Lately, all he has been working with is bumpers.

I would like to get some live or dead birds (frozen) to work him on before going to his first hunt test. I could possibly trap some pigeons around my office area... but are there any other ways you guys are aware of to get birds legally?

Thanks!

There are several places who sell ducks for training here in Tx.

One tip I learned the hard way. Sometimes some of those hunt test ducks get pretty nasty from repeated retrieves and hanging in the drying rack, so prepare accordingly in training.

So what the ideal shelf life for it? Or how to preserve them for the longest time?

What I did was to go watch the tests. Mine are different, but I learned what they did. I trained to the test. I was lucky enough to find someone at each test that allowed me to follow them through the test and see everything from 2 feet behind the handler.

I would not use frozen ducks during your training. The ducks at your test will be thawed out and the last thing you want is your dog to be used to frozen ducks during training and then switch to a freshly killed duck at the test. Bad things can happen...

Using a thawed duck daily and storing it in the fridge between uses, I find they last about a week before they get rank. Good luck.

Wrapping your birds in newspaper and putting them near the fan in the freezer is your best bet. They become freeze dried and last quite a while. You can also remove the guts and take out the breasts. Fill all the cavities with insulation foam and duct tape the cavity closed. That bird will last forever.
