Getting ready to paint a barreled action. Do you guys typically paint with the scope base installed? Or paint the action and install base on top of paint?

I would say paint it off of the barrel. But I have never done a paint job on a gun. I'm just thinking it would look better.

Depends on what look you're going for. I've done both.

Sometimes it looks good to have a colored barreled action, black bottom metal, black pic rail, and black scope/ scope rings. I'm done painting scopes. Acetone will get it off, but it's lots-o-work.

There's no wrong way, it's all in the artist's eye, to tell him what he likes.

Hmm, im really just trying to get the blued action and stainless barrel to be a flat black. Dont really care that bolt handle and scope base are different. Think im gonna go ahead and remove the base before painting.

I would want to paint the action without any bolt ons. That way the entire action is painted the same and if any of the bolt ons are changed out down the road, there won't be bare spots.

I took mine apart, before and after with where I bought the coating from.

Well, the place I was gonna use has a 2-3 week turnaround on cerakote. I need to break in the rifle over the next couple weeks as I'll have some time off. Would there be any harm in me rattle canning now and cerakoting in the future? Or should I just shoot with stainless barrel now and cerakote when I know I won't need the rifle? I'm thinking the later.

Doesn't matter. They should media blast it before cerakoting anyway. A little paint won't hurt. I've seen lots of competitive shooters run a shiny stainless barrel, because they don't hunt with it, and they're gonna burn it up anyway.
