I'm looking to buy a rangefinder and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on what to avoid or what you would recommend. I'm looking for one that will shoot out to 800-1000 yards. I've never used one and don't know much about them. I've looked at Lecia's on line but it seems like a lot to spend on someting that I will not use often. I may just look for a used one! Thanks in advance! Elk.

I'm really digging the Sig Kilo. I haven't read anything bad about it and the price can't be beat. Probably going to sell my Leopold and buy one.

Have been playing with one some and it has impressed so far. I haven't sold the Leupold range finders I have but I do like the SIG better than either of them or the others I have had in the past. The automatic brightness levels are much preferred to any other range finders. Have ranged off of building to over 2000 yards. with no deer to range off of have ranged bushes to over 1500 so it can be used further than anything I have tried even some that are 2 to 3 times the price.

I'm my experience, they will reliably range half of their claimed maximum.

If you're using a claimed 1000 yard RF, then it will range animals and trees at half that, almost all the time. Their claim is off of a stable rest at a reflective target, which is nothing hunters have to range. Bright sunny days play havoc on them. The infrared in the spectrum washes out the laser preventing it from getting a reading. Overcast and low light will allow them to work more reliably and range farther.

I use a range finder almost 20 days a month, every month. So I've learned you gotta pay to play. The Sig has my attention, from what I'm reading.

I'm currently using a Swaro Lazer Guide 8 x 30, same as I have for the last four years. It is a reliable 800 yard RF, but I have hit a house at 1 mile, at dusk in the Panhandle. It has given me readings beyond 1k, into the the teens, on many many occasions, though.

Fireman's info mirrors mine, though my RF is lower end. I have a Nikon 600, and it'll range a coyote to 300 yards very easily. It'll range a coyote to 400 if you work at it and try and try till you get a reading. I think I got 412 yards on a pig once, but that's all ya gonna get. And yes, it'll range a shiny truck to 900 yards, but that's not of much use to me.

I'd like a new and better RF, so I follow the posts to see what's worth the money and isn't crazy expensive.

They will probably sell a lot of them and raise the price a little if they are as good as what that article claims

Currently the best rangefinders on the market in terms of performance/cost are the leica 1600-b, sig sauer kilo 2000, and then one of the vectronix. The gunworks g7 while can range a long ways has a very large beam divergence for the price its at which increases the chances you will pull a range of something around your target and not the target itself.

I ranged a cow at 1246 and various objects from a new drilling rig at 2239 yards to a turkey at 308 today with the Sig RF and that was all right around noon today in S Tx.
I have used the Terrapin, Lecia HD-B ,G7, Zeiss,Multiple Bushnell's and Nikon's and this Sig is an impressive unit for the money.

I bought the Sig Kilo 2000 a few months back and couldn't be happier. I have been really impressed with it so far and the price isn't too bad either.

Only thing I would change on the Sig is add a clip on the side like the vortex.

The best thing about the SIg IMO is the auto brightness. Big deal when you forget to power it down and it briefly blinds you at dusk.
