Yes, great for turtles. Have already used it for that.

We have a small 'fish pond' on the property that at times has too many turtles in it.

We used to take care of that with .22 LR rifles, but with the .17 HMR I can stay on one side of the pond and pretty much reach everything. Set it up on the picnic table and wait. Sort of an East Texas version of prairie dog shooting.

maybe check regs for shooting fish eating birds?

I guess their ok if u have zero wind, under a 100 yard shoot, and you shoot everything in the head. If u don't have all the above you better invest in a good tracking dog.

Well just to start as some may know I'm only 15. I highly agree that it's all in your shot placement. My first coyote was takin with a .20 caliber pump up air gun at 20 yard. Shot him in the neck and he ran 50 yards DRT. Then my 2nd coyote comes along some years later when my dad actually allowed me to take my .22 to the woods (honestly he probably didn't think I'd actually kill anything so he didn't mind) but anyways. Called him in to 25 yards and shot him in the neck dropped right in his tracks. Now, back to the topic of the 17hmr. I got a savage bull barrel 17hmr for my 10th bday. Not but a month later it had claimed its first victim. My dad spotted a coyote at 200 yard in the pasture next door. It had its eye on my sisters dog and was comin in. At 120 yard my dad shot that yote and it jumped prolly 5 feet in the air and she only ran about 20 yards. I would trust that 17hmr to kill most varmints. It is a great round if you are trying to save pelts or if you are in a more civilized area. Just my 2 cents
Thanks Jt up

Just tried my new to me - Savage 93 R17HMR on a hunting trip in Cisco tx on Saturday & my first ever 4 shots were:

Crow @ 100 yards - squirrel stealing corn from a feeder 80 yards - shots 3&4 was a 125 pig @ 80 yards. 1st shot on pig was a neck shot dropped it / 2nd shot may have not been needed but put a round in base of skull for insurance

I will first preface my comment with yea a 17HMR will kill a Cape buffalo if you make a good enough shot. That doesn't make it the proper cartridge.
I call predators for folks all the time and there are two occasions that make me say "really" and that's when they pull out the 17HMR or they tell me after the Bobcat or coyote runs off they are using Full metal jacketed cheapo ammo and now I have to crawl thru the cactus and find it.

For that reason I will not allow a 17hmr in my hunting rig. Sure if everything comes together a 17 will kill a coyote, fox, pig or whatever. But I'm not a fair weather hunter. I hunt atleast 10 varmint contests a year plus manage coyotes on deer ranches, cattle ranches ect December through april. Very rarely is the wind under 10mph, alot of shots are under 100 yards but then alot are well over 100. I know how tough a fox, coyote, bobcat are. I've seen their guts blown out and still make it 200 yards dragging them behind. I've seen coyotes take a heart shot and at a dead run make it another 200 yo 300 yards, with a 223 or 243. Shot placement is everything but when money is on the line I'll have a 223, 22-250 or 243 in my hands for varmints. 17hmr is the caliber I'm teaching my 8yr old daughter to shoot to get ready for the next step, a 223.

My favorite for larger critters is the Hornady XTP. I have recovered several like the one attached. It will look like this out to about 70 yards, but then gets to slow to make the classic mushroom. I have also found the FMJ ammo valuable for edibles like chachalaca.

The .17 is always my go to rifle for small game or Hog hunting. All of this under 100yrds in my opinion depends on the shooter. I am comfortable reaching to 150 at the least. The reason I say that is it is so accurate and I have shot hogs at 120 before and dropped them like a bag of potatoes.

Anyone can shoot a hog but it takes balls to catch one.
