I was looking online for getting some new deeks for the up coming season and I remembered that a couple of guys complained about another couple of us using their deeks. They complained that we shoot their deeks so they didn't want us using theirs. Now of course we do not intentionally shoot them but it seems to sometimes comes with the territory right? Or would you be so protective of your deeks too?

I've only had one decoy shot...I won't mention who but I'm glad he did it, to see the look on his face and having that over him is worth far more than a silly decoy rofl

we/I shoot ducks. decoys are simply a tool used for hunting ducks. just like any other tool, sometimes they are accidentally broke or damaged. happens to a few every year. now we don't clean up cripples when we would hit a decoy, but sometimes when hunting over big spreads, teal/divers buzzing, or even some big ducks sitting down they will accidentally get shot or a flyer or two will hit one....it happens

Most of mine sound like rattle traps.

Lol. I had a brand new pintail drake catch a full load because a teal flew between the hunter and the decoy. It looked silver after that so I retired it after that hunt. Oh well.

Fear of shooting my decoys is why I call the shot when they're 50 yds up

I wait for 'em to clear the dekes. If my dekes are out I'm expecting anyone with me to do the same.

I only have one that rattles, thanks to a buddy that stepped in a soft spot trying to cap a cripple. Of course it was one of my G&H dekes. Pretty nice pattern tho!

I "KILL" ducks, so that should eliminate me from hunting with Judd. up

I have a few rattling decoys in my spread. Hot glue or a little epoxy takes care of it. I don't and won't ever buy expensive decoys so I don't worry about it! I think that like scratches on a gun....it adds character! Some people choose to sweat the small stuff and that's fine, but I'd never get mad at a friend for knocking a few holes in my deeks. Just gives us something to laugh about and razz each other over!

This is spot on.

I've killed ducks over inexpensive dekes most of my life. If you have to have expensive dekes without a scratch on them to make you feel good about life then you probably have a 4x4 truck that never gets muddy and a Yeti that doesn't have a scratch on it or blood in it as well. Life is too short for all that. I'm not taking any of this stuff with me when I die. Intentional or idiotic abuse? Preferably not but a pellet here and there through a season isn't going to come between me and my hunting buddies.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

Sounds like people are split on this with some more like me and don't see it as a big deal. To others it intolerable. I'll get some cheap deeks at Academy.

I can see why some don't like there decoys being shot, when you go with the cheaper brand 95% of the time there is no fixing a shot decoy, Now if you go with some of the higher end decoys, as GHG, Avian X, or Dakota, they are some of the easiest to be repaired with some hot glue. I know after teal season I will have almost three dozen decoys down because of my clients, but regular season is not bad.

About a third of my duck decoys I have been using for about 10 years, another third at least 20 years, the last third over 30 years. All my decoys look like they have been dragged through hell and some have. Dozens of different people have hunted with me over the years from first timers to old timers. Several of my decoys rattle or have dimples in them. I prefer no one shoots my decoys and never ever should anyone shoot a duck in my spread while it is swimming. I don't shoot swimming ducks either. If someone wants to shoot them on the water I advise them to do like I do and wait for the duck to stop all motion, then shoot. Less likely to hit a decoy that way. But really, I don't care if a decoy accidentally gets hit. For that matter I don't care if you know your going to hit it as long as we have an agreement for every decoy you shoot that starts sinking, you are going to give me a decoy of yours to replace it.
