Ok, want to try to come to the greatest state at least twice a year now. We've been going in March for pigs (which has been a blast) and once turkey. Would like to come in feb/march and then maybe 6 months beyond that, aug/sept. (NOT labor day, forget that)

But of course, much different weather and foliage in aug/sept.

thoughts? suggestions?

Was thinking of maybe night pig hunt somewhere and then combined with one or two other things on other days. Needs to be 3 or 4 days to make the full days drive worthwhile.

Are predators worthwhile/possible in that heat and foliage?

exotics?

Maybe even combined with a day of fishing????

thanks

One day with a guide stripper/hybrid fishing would be fun. When I lived on the Western slope, we would go fishing with friends when we came down. A trip to the coast fishing offshore is fun as well.

Exotics are open year round here, pay to play of course. I wouldn't varmint hunt here that time of year if it cost me.

Where you are going down here, would probably play into what else you can do.

That is the time of year I'd rather be in Colorado! grin

well, could go anywhere, would like to stay (more or less) west of I35, north of I10. That keeps it within one long day's drive (it's 1000 miles door to door to san antonio)

Can you elaborate on why you wouldn't varmit hunt that time of year?

is it worth doing exotics in that time frame?

As far a varmint hunting, it is just plain hot, get a good animal and the hide isn't worth much. I have done it many times as predator control, but would suck to win the lotto and have a big cat come in and have a crappier than normal hide. Of course if it is just for kicks, then......Mostly the heat for me though, just "feels" right in cooler weather. For a few nights having fun, what the hellgrin

I used to have a couple friends who would drive up to Colorado, just to go varmint hunting there, usually in December-Jan when it was a nice 0*-15* at night. A couple fo times during summer for P dogs too.

I can't say about exotics that time of year, one of the other fellas will chime in, I have never really went for them.

You should be able to hunt Axis in the late summer as most places will have many hard horned bucks to hunting. Good Luck with your choice! Elk

Everyone seems to say Axis it the great table fare as well, never had it, but a nice bonus if true.

Yep, bring sunscreen, bug spray, gym shorts, all-cotton t-shirt and some quiet deck shoes and hunt axis. Don't bother bringing underwear - it's commando season.

Once he's down, don't waste any time getting him on ice.

doves and axis as mentioned. Sept is a good month for bow fishing - get a guide and do a night hunt for trash fish.

offshore or bay fishing, Dove season opens Sept. 1, early Teal season opens mid Sept., exotic year around, hogs year around ... as stated, varmints fur will be sketchy at best due to the heat if you plan on getting anything to mount.

Why on earth would you want to leave Colorado to come to Texas in the middle of the most oppressing time of year? August and September are the most anticipated time of year for me visit Colorado!

With that said, dove and teal are open in September. Otherwise, fishing maybe?

Nilgai Bulls have good capes by then and the hunting stays good all year. You could bay fish in the morning and shoot a big Nilgai Bull in the evening when it's not so hot. Very exciting hunt! Little further drive but it's worth it.

been doing that for 40 years, tired of it

Besides, Wyoming antelope doesn't start until end of Sept, if I actually pull a tag for the first time in like 3 or 4 years.
