A good friend of mine came in from Lubbock this weekend and we got to break out the rifles and do a bit of shooting. Friday the wind was hammering pretty good, blowing anywhere from 16 to 24 mph, but generally over 20. Three of us slipped down into some sand hills along the river breaks and set up steel at 640 and 780. Due to the way the wind was swirling through those hills the 640 was way harder than the 780 target. The 640 was on a rear quartering angle and would swap back and forth, back and forth. We put quite a few rounds downrange though and had some fun. It was my first time to try this particular spot. A guy could set up a real good medium range course down in that hole. Lots of technical/hunting style shots in the 300 to 700 range would be possible, with a couple of good firing positions.

Saturday morning we wanted to go ahead and stretch it on out so we went to a different place that I shoot quite a bit. I knew we could get as far as we wanted in the +/- 18 mph wind we had rolling that morning. We set one target up at 935 that had a wicked wind bounce off the hill. The second target was 1355 across 2 ridges and 3 valleys. We figured that was far enough for the 308 my friend was wanting to get dope for.

This is set up at 935. My elevation was dead money. Wind was brutal. Intensity and angle was shifting, creating wildly varying bounce off the target ridge. Wind hold with either 6.5 was anywhere from .8 to 2.2 at any given time. To give an idea, my friend hit the first three in a row, then missed the next 4 after that. That 6.5x47 he is shooting is dialed tight as a gnats a$$ too. If you could catch the right condition and run it you were golden. But when it shifted it would shift about 1 MIL, and the shift was very difficult to see from the firing position. The shooting position at 935:

This is the setup at the 1355. Really hard to tell the lay of the land from these pictures but there are some really deep valleys down that powerline cut that we were shooting over. I dialed 15.5 MIL elevation on my creed, it was dead money with no correction. Wind I dialed 2 mil and held about 3 more. With the 308 shooting the 175 Berger OTM, I think he dialed 4 and was holding another 2-3. I will say I was very impressed with how that OTM flies through trans-sonic.

If you live up here in the panhandle, you just pretty much go shoot no matter what the wind is. Mainly because it is always blowing. If you only shot on good days, you wouldn't shoot very much. One day last week my 243 was getting .3+ mil of wind deflection at 200 yards during my zero check. And that was with an 87 VMAX.

I did have to defer one day last week though. Wind was 45 sustained, gusting to 60. That was the day we had all the really bad fires.

Wish I could have been there, the wind up here was running over 50 mph, blew the front door porch roof off of a new build. It was brutal. Nice looking rifles!

It kicked ours too Big Fitz, but that is how you get better. I imagine between 3 guys and 7 rifles we put 250 rounds downrange in 2 days. I know I shot 90 between my Creed and my 243. I got some hits at 780 with my sporter barreled, factory stocked 243 shooting an 87 VMAX.

We got no snow yesterday. Some very brief windows of calm lately, but mostly anywhere from pretty breezy, to using log chain for wind flags. We are pretty dry, seems like half the country has been on fire the last week or so.

Thanks for posting enjoyed the read. How big was target at 1355? Any ideas on hit percentage.
Have not taken the .308 past 1000 but plan to soon. I am using the175 MKT not sure how they will do out that far

The times I've taken a 308 out past 1K and customers shooting out past 1K, we have always used the heavier bullets. I've played a lot with the 190 SMK out to 1200, and it does better than the 175 SMK. The heavier weight and higher BC do help. I have also used the Berger 185 Hybrid. Bullet weight and high BC will be the name of the game out past 1K with the 308.

Target at 1355 was a full size IDPA. Target at 935 was a 2/3 IDPA. I think that figures about 2 to 2.25 MOA on each. Hit percentage probably 50% once dialed in.

That 308 did real well. I think he said that according to Shooter, it was going subsonic at 1300. That was about the same place my 140 AMAX was going sub. The 140 AMAX seemed to fly OK through the transition. I shot some 140 Hornady BTHPM, and they didn't. They were going sub about 1250, and were getting real squirrely. That 175 Berger OTM he was shooting did real well though. It was a new load for him with almost no dope, so he was figuring it out as he went. Once he got dope though he had no trouble getting hits.

Only way to get good at shooting in the wind, is to shoot in the wind often.

Today was light, but was a head wind all day. I hate a head wind! I told the two guys that they will have to hold left, have to hold right, and had better watch mirage. Multiple times today I sounded like this: "based on the last hit at the last distance we have a 5 mph left to right, so hold point 5 left. (Guy is getting situated, or loading a Mag) WIND SHIFTED, hold point 3 left now! Boom....ping, guys looks at me "that's crazy!" I said, "that's a head wind for you" "Did you see that mirage change?"

Hate a head or tail wind!
