After a SLOW afternoon on the lake on Good Friday, my buddy and I decided to go back to his dad's place and sight in his new .17 HMR. I had my .223 in the truck with a new scope so I sighed her in also. It was getting late and we decided it'd be about a perfect evening to sit and maybe take a pig or 2. Headed to the blind, got there around 5:30pm. Less than 20 minutes goes by, young boar walks out, takes a look at the feeder, and hauls off. About 45 minutes later a little doe walks right by the blind. We're sitting there watching her for a few minutes and we see a big boar running around in the thick brush about 150 yards out, headed to the feeder. He walks right up to it and starts eating corn. Boom, 55gr Remington PSP drops him directly under the feeder. Not 10 seconds later, buddy spots a big coyote to our right at about 40 yards. He swings around, gets his gun out the window, fires one shot with the .17, boom! Dead Coyote. Coyote was healthy, weighed in at 45lbs. Our scale maxed out at 200, but we guessed the big boar to weigh in between 225 and 250. He was clean, didn't stink, and the meat looks great. Got him quartered up sitting on ice in the cooler!

Nice!

Where did the shot strike the yote? If seen yotes walk off after taking 4 shots to the body with 17 HMR so I'm thinking your buddy hit the head or spine.

Back of the head between the ears. I've shot one square in the chest with a .270, watched him lay there all evening, get up and run off when I was climbing out of the stand. They're tough critters for sure

Good job.

Very nice Boar.

Surprised the Yote was taken so cleanly with the .17 HMR

Personally I consider the practical limits for it to be Raccoon sized varmints.

I have read accounts of others successfully killing Coyotes with the 17 but I haven't tried with mine and probably won't.

Good shooting gentlemen!
