Hi All-

Growing up I had little to no access to hunting and fishing however I was obsessed with both. The way that I stayed connected and learned was by reading everything that I could get my hands on. Field and Stream, every book that I could find (AC Becker, Larry Bozka, Rudy Grigar, Chester Moore, etc.), among others that I can't remember.

As an adult, I make a point of taking kids in similar situations to do stuff outdoors. This is because I know exactly what it is like to want to but not be able to and I believe that the stuff that we do is a productive way out of some really bad choices.

That said, I've got a 12 year old who lives in a pretty rough part of town who reminds me of me. I cannot take him everywhere with me or even often but I'd like to send gift subscriptions to a couple of magazines that will help feed his interest and that he will learn from. I have sent a subscription to Deer and Deer Hunting magazine because I believe it to be the best magazine out there related to deer hunting. I'd like to send a second one but I can't decide which one to send and I haven't read many magazines in awhile.

What outdoor magazine (I'd like it to cover both hunting and fishing) would you suggest? Field and Stream has a lot of stuff from parts of the country that is completely irrelevant to our area. I just don't know what would appeal to him- entertaining and good content- and be relevant to our area.

I think Texas Fish & Game is still in business that would be a good one.

Field and Stream has the best overall staff of writers. Texas Hunting and Fishing News is good for a local mag.

I think the Texas Outdoors Journal is still around as a snail mail subscription too.

Another I always enjoyed though not Texas based is Fur-Fish-Game magazine. It has articles that are interesting in that they are not the ones just pimping the latest electronic gadgets, articles that are just outfitter advertisements, or rewritten boilerplate trophy deer and bass type articles you read in almost every month in the big outdoor mags. There are articles in FFG you just don't find much in those other magazines anymore like on trapping, hunting small game, wilderness survival, and woodsmanship for example.

Yep. Even though a lot of it is not for our area, it's still cool for a young man to read and dream about going there. Outdoor Life is good for young ones too. They have a lot of the outdoor survival articles and comics. Both subscriptions can be had fairly cheap too.

Safari Club International has my favorite magazine. It's pricey, but the main reason I'm a member.

I'm late to the hunting scene. Didn't go until I was in my 40's. I always, always learn at least one thing from F & S and outdoor life. worth a $1/ month in my opinion. Like you say a lot doesn't apply to what i"m doing now, but heck ya never know.

"Colorado Outdoors" is a nice one to read.

I was fortunate enough to grow up reading Field-n-Stream and Outdoor Life magazines. These mags do a good job of covering both fishing and hunting. They will definitely get you into the outdoors. For local information in addition to Texas Fish & Game, Lonestar Outdoor News is informative.

Deer and Deer Hunting. As the name implies, it covers both deer behavior and deer hunting from an individual perspective so the reader can make better decisions on what tactics work best.

I know you said hunting AND fishing, and I think most people have those covered, but I can remember when I was little my parents got me a subscription to In-Fisherman magazine and Bassmasters. I remember laying down at night looking at all the new lures and techniques that the magazine had to offer and couldn't sleep cause I wanted to fish so bad. When fall came around I was looking into hunting magazines and still reading about cold fishing techniques.

I am still a fan of F&S and Outdoor Life. They are cheap and fun reads - especially for young folks. I always enjoyed reading about stuff from all over.

Deer-only magazines are fine for a youngster but there are only so many stories that can be written on whitetail hunting.

I also think Eastmans' would be a fun read for a young person.

Used to read F&S pretty regularly. Had a sub for years. But sometime ago they or Outdoor Life (pretty much the same mag) did a piece praising Obama for his conservation efforts and belittled everyone that pointed out his anti-gun policies.

Didn't renew my sub because of that and refuse to read them.

Now a days, I mainly use this site and a few others for news and tips.

Another vote for Texas Fish & Game. Their lake reports are spot on.

Texas Fish & Game and Texas Outdoors are both good and informative. Peterson's Hunting Journal is very good for hunting in the west.

I recently was given several issues of Peterson's Hunting Journal and was pleasantly surprised. Definitely going to add a subscription to accompany "The Western Hunter" and "Elk Hunter" which I also thoroughly enjoy.

Elk hunters is a good one. The RMEF publication is also a good one.
