I have two 120 gallon tanks off of 18 wheelers that were given to me and I would like to convert them to store diesel and gasoline on my property. Will These tanks work for what I am wanting to do? Can someone give me advice on anything I need to do to the tanks before using them in this manner. I will be putting them up on a rack to gravity feed into whatever needs filling. I don't believe they need vents, the only thing I know I need to add is fuel filter on the outlet of each one. Any advice or help with this would be very helpful.

Thanks

Think about filling them. Can you get fuel delivered?

That's my only advice. If you have to transport fuel in yourself I would advise to build a trailer for them and just remove the tongue or wheels if you think they will be stolen

Yes a place nearby will deliver off-road diesel and gasoline as long as it's atleast 100 gallons.

So neither tank needs a vent on it?

Yes, I believe that all fuel tanks need to be vented, but I am an IT guy. Don't bet your life on it.

I would recommend against it unless you use a decent volume of fuel. If the stuff sits there for a period of time it can go bad, can accumulate water etc.

If you don't vent it the fuel will not come out good.

We stored tractor fuel and gasoline in 300 gallon tanks when I was growing up on the farm. We didn't have a separate vent. We simply took off the gas cap while we were using the gas.

I would talk to the fuel supplier. There may be restrictions they have to work with and they might answer some of your questions. I say you will need vented tanks....just guessing.

Oughta' work. Best advice I have is when you build your racks and mount your tanks shim the front (dispencing) end up a couple inches. All the crap in the fuel will settle at the low end and save your filters.

edited to add: Using gravity fow, I'm not sure you'll even have enough pressure to push fuel through a "real" filter. You'll probably end up with more of a fine mesh screen than an actual fuel filter.

We never used vented tanks or fuel filters. No farmers in out part of the state did. I still remember the man who delivered the fuel. His name was Skeeter Fant.

Yes gravity flow will go though filters but think about the position of your fill inlet. On the 18 wheeler tractor tanks, they fill from the top and dispense through a small 3/8 hole in the bottom to the fuel pump. It would take quite a while to fill even an UTV at that rate. I would suggest mounting a 2 stroke hand fuel pump in the top fuel inlet if possible. Like was mentioned, make the suction end the high end by 3-4 inches to force the low end to capture the settled residue. This fuel pump will handle a fuel filter. I would think that TSC would carry such a pump and you can cut your suction pipe to fit.about an inch off the bottom. I would drain the tanks when they get real low about twice a year and wash them out with the plug pulled with a high pressure washer to knock any residue off the walls and floor.

With all due respect... a lot has changed since you were on the farm Bill. Fuel these days is trash and many modern fuel systems require fresh clean fuel.

I have a 1957 boat motor im pretty sure you could fill the tank with 1/2 gas and wiz the other half full and it would still run fine, not so with the newer ones. Diesels are getting even pickier.

Stick it. You still only have to remove the cap while filling your tank.

Sure Bill, but kiss your fuel system goodbye.

Same here, but never seen one gravity feed only. All have at least a hand pump. Some are fancy with a 12v pump that plugs into a 2-flat.
