I was out at my ranch this weekend (southern Montague County) and came across this animal while driving around at sunset. We don't have many neighbors and they certainly do not have dogs. It froze just long enough for me to snap a blurry photo and then darted away from me into the bushes. Need some help identifying. I have some observations but I want to see what the experts think.

Thanks!

Coydog? I have never actually seen one so it's just a guess on my part.

Could be a coydog, this is out there a bit, I am certainly no expert but I have seen wolves that look a lot like that.

Looks like a large, long legged coyote to me. Also the right posture and angle to make it look bigger I believe. Has a very rich coat, fur buyers would probably love it.

Most likely a yote. Does have some pretty dark markings so could have a bit of dog/yote mix.

Google "mexican red wolf". I know of a pack that just recently worked through Kyle (just south of Austin).

I would say dog, German shepherd mix. Somebody drop the animal or got loose. Not yote.

Thank you for all of the responses. Still don't know what I'd do in a shoot or don't shoot moment if I see it again.

Looks like a malamute to me as well, or a cross between that and a wolf. The under bellies of wolves tend to be a little darker. About 20 years ago we leased a ranch in Eastland County from the sheriff. He had a big problem with hybrids killing livestock and wild game, and had government trappers come in and set snares. They got about 3 if I remember right. All hybrid, but big as heck. Much bigger than a hotel or coydog.

That's someone's dog....not a yote or hybrid.

I think some folks are fooled into thinking a Coyote is something else… simply because it is somewhat out of the ‘norm’ (in terms of color or size). Suddenly you get suggestions of ‘Wolves’, Coydogs, etc…

Where I live, the average Coyote is this color and about this size (when mature):

But some have much longer legs and are longer in the body:

Others still, deviate quite a bit in color, this one might be mistaken for someone’s dog because of its darker color and highlights. Also, when ‘looking at you’ the muzzle appears to be shorter than it really is and the head blockier, but this is a Coyote (I’ve seen it in person several times):

Here is another example (different animal) of a darker than normal Coyote for my area:

And here is an example of yet another. Please note in the following two pics (same animal) how different the muzzle and body shape can look when viewed from different angles.

Angle one:

Same Coyote a few frames later, profile….definitely a Yote:

I maintain the OP’s pic is just a large, dark ‘Yote’ and nothing more.

Flint.
