Here is the problem. My wife has developed a flinch due to rifle sound. I do not think it is a recoil flinch. You can plainly see the flinch after the shot. If you know how to cure problem or know of someone that knows how to solve it. Please contact me. Thanks Daniel

Go to a 22LR. Have her use it over a few sessions. Then move up to something very mild. A suppressor on a heavy 308 is an excellent teaching tool if you have one. Wear foam plugs and good muffs. Howard Leight foam plugs from Amazon have the most sound reduction. Compare the muff ratings and buy the max. Have her remove her ear rings and make sure her hair is out of the way so there is a good seal. I would be happy to help if you are in the Austin area at some point.

I thought the loud boom was disturbing my wife as well, not so. It was trigger pull and recoil. She could not shoot my gun accurately at all, it pulled at 5 pounds. She had to almost tug on the trigger. Then I got her her own heavy barrel 243, put in a Timney set at 2 pounds. Now she shoots as accurately as I do. A problem that I see with a lot of lady shooters is that guys get them youth model rifle and they get the crap beat out of them. My wife's heavy gun helps on recoil and the lighter trigger made a world of difference. The heavy gun is no issue lugging around, she is petite and will walk the 1/4 mile to the blind without any issue at all.

1st- dry fire the snot out of the rifle if it's a center fire rifle. Work on the fundamentals during this dry firing. Then progress to a 22LR for live round practice. Before each firing session, dry fire. Also, have someone load the rifle and close the bolt where she can not see if it's a live round or not and work on the same firing fundamentals. It will cure it, but it takes dry firing practice.

She is already wearing plugs & muffs and has been for several years. She is shooting a 7-08 that she has had for 10 years or longer. She can & does shoot 3/4 in groups with it. The flinch (what ever it is-recoil or sound) has developed within the last 2 years or less.

Tactical cowboy, age & eyes is all that I can think of. She used to wear contacts now glasses. She has always been afraid of being "scoped".

Reduced Recoil loads to see if that helps also.

Brother in Law, trigger pull is approx. 2.5 on her rifle. The handgun is another issue but has been sent to S&W to get that changed, should be back next week.
Dune2218, I don't think that is the problem. She will out sit most men when it comes to sitting in a deer blind, example: Nov 2014, NW Missouri, Coldest temps on record in 100 yrs but she sat in a pop-up with blowing snow from dark to dark, next day temps were same but no snow, she killed a big old 10 pt in sub zero wind chill temps.

Yall out to drive up and spend a day with JGFireman and take his class before your elk hunt. I've been hunting/shooting for 35+ years and have always been a decent shot, but a few hours of instruction with Jason really helped me identify and improve bad habits like flinching, poor trigger control, etc. -- you'll both walk away a lot more confident at any distance, short or long. Plus he's a heck of a good guy and a lot of fun.

Step back with a 22 or pellet rifle, start working on basic again.

I can shoot my cheap scope on the 17 with no glasses or contacts and it is clear, but my leupold mk4 I needed glasses to clear up the the reticle much less the target and that was really hard to do. I would pull back to a 22. Dry fire the heck out of it with her ear protection on. If she flenches start over, be patient. Coach her and focus on breathing and trigger SQUEEZE. Repeat until there is no flinching. Once flenching stops start adding live rounds. If she flenches stop, resume dry fire. Be the voice that is coaching her, resume. Don't let her leave the bench until she stops flenching with a 22. Once she stops flenching with a 22 don't give her a break, let her burn through some 22 ammo watching her form. When she has that down, put the centerfire back in her hands. Dry fire it, watch her. If she does well add live rounds. If she does not pull back to the 22 until she has it down. Be patient. It may take her several trips to get her head squared away, her head is where the problem is. If you are too hard on her she may disengage from the whole thought process and put her hands up. Don't let it go there. Some people (men and women) are scared of the bang and recoil in their minds. I have seen big men that were horrible shots with all sorts of rifles because in their mind "it's coming". Breathe, squeeze, repeat. Breathe, squeeze, repeat. Most important, before you start make sure her form is correct. If her form is not correct a centerfire is going to kick her. Form has to come first. Once her form becomes second nature, squeeze becomes second nature, the POP becomes second nature, then cutting out a bulls eye becomes second nature. I am not a firearms instructor but I have taught all of my kids to shoot and many others that were new to it. They need to understand that the rifle is not going to hurt them, the only thing that will hurt them is their brain. Good form, relax, breathe, squeeze, let the "pop" be a surprise. Repeat. For some, it's like jumping off the high board in the pool. You are worried about that belly flop so your entire form and state of mind is effected before you jump. Go back to the basics. Form, dry fire with 22, live rounds with 22, dry fire with CF, live fire with CF. It's all in the head. Has worked for me anyway...

I just gave my There are folks on here who are way better at this sort of thing than me, and teach actual classes on the basics of shooting. I am just a local yocal that learned how to shoot from my Dad and have passed that on to my kids. If you want professional help I would hit up JG the Fireman. I hear he is very good at what he does. I would like to learn on some long range shooting from him myself someday.

Sounds like she is slapping the trigger.
Buy some splat targets that change color on impact. Load the rifle without her knowing if the round is live or dead. Have her follow through on the trigger squeeze to hold the sight picture of the target where she can see the bullet impact take place. When empty she should pull the trigger all the way through the shot and the pressure on the trigger keeps everything still and the sight picture through the scope on target.
I'm a great natural shot but I had this habit until FiremanJG showed me how to correct it. This is a big deal the farther you shoot and the only way to hit steel and actually see impact at 600-800 yards.
To be clear, slapping is when once you squeeze and the hammer breaks you bail out of your contact with the trigger and relax or flinch out of your sight picture and hold.
Watch her trigger finger when she shoots and you'll probably see that she relaxing it and loosing contact and follow through pressure once the hammer hits the primer.

Fireman, Getting to Wolfe city from Pittsburg is not a problem. It's getting from the gate to the range when it's wet like it was when you had the shoot about 4-6 weeks ago, especially in a 2 wheel drive pickup. Daniel

all the above, plus 1 more tip; right before she is ready to fire (target centered, etc) have her close eye for 2 seconds, and the re-open (holding steady the whole time); if target 'moves' when re-opened, re-center and repeat. IF it keeps 'moving' when eyes closed, then something is WRONG with her hold, and body 'corrects' when eyes closed and/or flinching. Remedy is to adjust hold (in opposite direction of movement), so that target stays centered before and after eyes open and closed. This will tighten groups when you're doing everything else correctly.

Daniel It's a gravel road, therefore 2WD is all that's needed. I also put in gravel from the driveway to the platform. Never have to get muddy. Just letting you know, in case I could help.
