We are going to have to put in cover crops this summer, price of sunflowers is very high and none of the farmers in North Texas are planting them this year. Mostly corn and wheat, plan to come in and plant sesame or millet once crops are out.

will be planting approx. 30 acres of rice mid-late may, possibly about 10 acrs of corn if the river stays down and it dries out enough, will just be millet if it doesn't. that and around 100 acres jap/browntop anytime from late july to early sept. I have the ground prepped and ready to plant in late july, and try to plant it before a rain. Ideally, id like to do it around mid august, but if a good rain comes a little early ill go ahead and plant. Do that to save having to "flush"

5 miles from me. My native's come back year after year, just have to add a little fertilizer every now and them. Got all my fields turned back in January and already have Sunflowers popping up.

First we have to drain it off. The $%^&*()@# beavers built a 5 foot deep 8 foot wide and 10 foot mound of sticks and clay mud on top of the drain hole. Once we drain it and let it dry out a bit we are going to doze out a lot of the Rush plants. Late summer we will get back in there and plant.

On my duck place I'm thinking I won't drain it until a couple weeks before I plant my millet. I know Cappy always drained his now, any reason not to wait and keep the moisture in the soil until July and then drain and plant in August?

Side note, does anyone plant rice in N TX?

To be honest Jorge one of my farmers orders it and I pay the bill. I know it's a contract seed. I will find out what brand for you. I'm doing 80 acres worth of seed. It's going to be in strips on 10 different fields.

You could drain now and possibly get the correct moist plants going with some ground disturbance. But, I've been able to get more ducks into planted millet than moist soil. So I kinda gave up on that. Your drawdown plan to maintain moisture for the millet is good, but a downfall from this is that undesired plants like reeds, cattails, and rushes can take over. Other than keeping a handle on them with some spray, it works out quite well. I don't know of anyone planting it for harvest or hunting in NTX. But, there are a couple crawfish farms that plant it for forage. It grows from the coast into Missouri....its even grown on the sides of mountains in Asia lol. Depending on the soil in the particular area, don't see why it wouldn't grow there. It can be broadcasted on mud flats as well with decent results. But, if you really want to get good yields(6000+ lbs/acre) it cost upwards of two hundred a acre to keep.(fertilize, seed, LOTS of nitrogen, weed control spray, maybe insecticide, and water) Commercial operations planting to harvest for profit spend well beyond that. It helps if you can put water on and take it off when needed as well. Rice will grow and produce with adequate rainfall just like anything else, maintaining a flood is primarily for weed control.
