A fire started on some grassland near a farm. The county fire department was called to put out the fire. The fire was more than the county fire department could handle. Someone suggested that a nearby volunteer bunch be called.
Despite some doubt that the volunteer outfit would be of any assistance, the call was made.
The volunteers arrived in a dilapidated old fire truck. They rumbled straight towards the fire, drove right into the middle of the flames and stopped! The firemen jumped off the truck and frantically started spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily controlled parts.
Watching all this, the farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire department's work and was so grateful that his farm had been spared, that right there on the spot he presented the volunteers with a check for $1,000. A local news reporter asked the volunteer fire captain what the department planned to do with the funds.
'That ought to be obvious,' he responded, wiping ashes off his coat. 'The first thing we're gonna do is get the brakes fixed on our fire truck!'

For those of us who were on rural volunteer fire department in the old days, there is more truth than fiction to this story.

Having had been a member of a volunteer fire depth. For over 16 years, I resemble that old joke. I took a leave of absent due to getting older and working in a new job, family business with my son, plus other issues I didn't agree to with new leadership. Was assistant chief for several years and everyone wanted me to run for chief, just didn't have the time to serve the community in a way I thought was required, know money and equipment is and has been an issue for volunteer depts for years. What hurt some times is when we would get complaints from people for taking so long to respond. Just had to explain, we are volunteers, have other jobs and home lives plus other interests or commitments,(farming), or what ever, sorry some people just don't understand reality in rural areas...... figure they can move out here and still have the same accommodation's as a big city......

Volunteers are appreciated by most of us.

I very much appreciate volunteer fire fighters we had a house built when I lived in Georgia and two weeks to the day of us moving in it caught fire (electrical fire the electrician was drunk while doing the wiring) . The volunteer fire department was actually the ones who put the fire out and actually saved my dog who was trapted inside I will forever be greatful for that I didn't mean to offend anyone by the joke. We can't thank our Emergency responders enough!

don't think there was any offense taken ... I grew up with my dad being on the VFD for my home town, he was a member for all his adult life, maybe even a charter member dating back into the 1930s. As a kid, I made a lot of calls with the crew. Early on they only had a siren system around town. When the siren went off a certain number of times (think it was 3), all the VFD members around town hauled for the fire station. 1st person there would call the telephone operator to find out where the fire was, then he wrote it on the chalk board right inside the station, then got in the fire truck. The second person that got there would jump in the truck too and they would leave heading to the fire. As others showed up, they could look at the chalk board and head out to help too. I recall the older fire truck would run like a scalded ape but the brakes weren't very good when carrying a thousand or so gallons of water ...
