Just wondering if it's worth the extra money for Tposts instead of going with pipe for an 8 ft or ten ft fence? I'm pricing 2 7/8's pipe for right at or just over a $1 a foot and 2 3/8's for even less. T posts are over a buck a foot. In the grand scheme of things, I'm thinking that for a thousand posts, it's a thousand dollar difference going with all pipe over T posts. both would be pounded in, so time and labor installing them would be the same.

As I see it, the T post would be faster to connect the wire to because of the knobs on the sides of the T post. Pipe would be stronger, but I'm wondering if I would have to drill the pipe to attach the wire? or does the fence stay upright without anything holding it upright if you just use a tie around the pipe to the fence?

I would think the fence would stand on its own being net wire and tied to the pipe in multiple locations.

But im not a fence builder by trade and I didn't stay at a holiday inn either.

Your pipe up there is a lot cheaper than here. The only draw back I can see from pounding the pipe in is. After you pound a tee post in you can still bend it a little to line the fence up. A pounded in pipe may not be that easy to line up if it is a little off.

Definitely not a fence expert, but I have noticed that people using only pipe will space the pipe further apart than if they were also using pipe and t-post. Might be cheaper using just pipe then, if that is true. Hopefully a fencing expert will verify.

I think of a 8' fence differently than some do. I do not want it rock solid, tight and no give. I want the fence to have some spring or give to it when and animal hits it. If an animal hits a solid object what is going to break first? The very rigid fence/pipe or the animal? If the fence has some give, a spring board effect then the animal can bounce off with a little less hair usually. The fence needs some give to have memory. Pipe for corners and a line post every so often is a good thing. You can buy 10' T post for well under a $1/ft down here. They make special wire ties for round pipe posts very similar to a T-post clip. Pipe down in my area runs over a $1/ft for 2 3/8" and even more for 2 7/8". 3" is more common for corners. I know of one fence builder who can build an 8' fence out of 3" galv corners, 2" line posts/brace pipes and 10'4" galv T-posts for $4/ft more or less turnkey on larger properties with mostly straightlines and normal amount of corners/braces. Water gaps and more corners will drive the cost up. He drives the corners 5'+ deep.

Thank you, that's kind of what I was thinking, but wasn't very sure about. Still not sure what way I go because I might be able to get the Tposts for less once I start buying them instead of comparing Craigslist postings for pipe to online store prices for tposts.

Check with D&D in Seguin as they are hard for anyone to beat on quantity pricing on all the materials to build a fence if you are doing the labor. Uvalco is another place to price it you live west or south of SA.

All pipe will make your high fence too stiff.

If your using wire like stay-tite, it's designed to act like a spring. It can't do that if you go all pipe because the pipe does not flex like the tpost will.

You can end up with a dead animal from just hitting the wire if you go all pipe. Especially on catch pens and smaller places or near corners.
