Anyone have an opinion on the Geo Tracker 4x4 for a hunting rig? I've been looking into getting one for deer hunting. Thanks

Only issue I would see would be ground clearance

Ground clearance, lack of power, open differentials, I could go on. You should buy a Jeep... Just so happens I have one for sale

Should be fine. You can get lift kits for it.

The one I'm looking at is a 1996 Geo Tracker.

Those are good little hunting rigs!! The open rear end IS going to be a problem IMO. You could find someone to weld it up pretty cheap most likely but... Then the bearings will fail pretty quick if you drive it on the highway much.

Good little rigs, you can weld the rear if it's only going to be seeing dirt, but the rear axles aren't known for strength. If you don't go crazy on tire size, you should be alright. '96 will have the 16 valve motor which are kind of hit or miss, the biggest thing is the timing chain. If it doesn't have paper documentation that it's been replaced, plan on doing it. Parts are reasonable, and upgrades are pretty easy to come by.
It's the newer, cheaper, safer version of the Samurai. Remember when you could get a rust free, running Samurai for a grand? That's where these are now. Here pretty soon, they're going to command more of a premium because they're small, cheap, and relatively easy to work on.

Is $500 a decent price to pay? It's my friends daily driver. He has recently replaced the radiator, battery, timing chain, brakes, and clutch. It has a straight body and pretty clean inside and out.

If you don't, let me know where to pick it up. If it's a runner/driver for $500, you can't go wrong. Worst case scenario, you'll get most of your money back in scrap.

I ended up getting the Geo Tracker 4x4. It's a pretty cool little toy. I'm not sure how to post pics.

I loved mine! Over 30mpg for a 4WD is hard to beat. I built a receiver hitch rack for mine. Ground clearance is the biggest flaw. That and the light weight can be problematic in slick mud - not enough weight to cut ruts. Otherwise, they are great rigs for the money. Congrats on a good find!
