I'm thinking about a short .22 build. Does anybody have experience with one? Bolt or semi auto ? I will probably get a can for it. Any experience with the tacsol sbx? I like the Ida of it but the only bolt gun I see is 77/22
I would be starting from scratch

I've got 2 a 10/22 with a 10" barrel and a AF with a 5.5" barrel. They're a lot of fun. If you're gonna go with a 10/22 and run a suppressor all the time the SBX makes sense.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I would be awful tempted to use a Browning Buckmark rifle.

I have a cmmg 22 upper I had Morgan cut the barrel down on. Works perfect and it's also suppressed.

This is an old pic of my 22 AR with 5.5" barrel and suppressor tucked under a 7" Fortis rail. I have since added a dust cover and forward assist.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Pick your poison.....Remington 597 AAC-SD SBR with 10" barrel, Custom Ruger 10/22 with TacSol SBX barrel, and AR 22 SBR with 5" TacSol Upper. Some of my favorite guns to shoot.....

Tacsol kestrel upper. Not 100% on reliability

If you want the barrel to keep standard velocity ammo subsonic so it is quiet with a suppressor you need to keep it no longer than 5.5", but 5" is better. That's why I cut my AR 22 upper to 5"....no sonic crack with any 22 ammo.

That is good to know. So heavy barrel host , chop and thread to 5" or so, and all ammo will work not just subs?
Will a 10/22 cycle correctly?
I like the 10/22 type magazines, is there a 10/22 ar chassis out there that would work and still use the 10/22 mags?

How accurate are the 5-6" barrels? I'm looking for turtle hunting accuracy to 40-75 yards

That's why I cut my AR 22 upper to 5"....no sonic crack with any 22 ammo. I run CCI Standard velocity ammo through a suppressed Savage MK2 FVSR 16" barrel and I have never had a sonic crack from any rounds. The only thing heard is the firing pin (bolt action) and the target being hit. Standard velocity is subsonic.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Correct, I should have said all ammo including high velocity will stay subsonic in a 5" barrel.

I haven't had any problems with Remington or CCI ammo in any of mine, however, I feel like CCI .22 ammo is the best quality. You could use any 10/22 receiver...there are a few stocks you could modify to use on a shorter barrel. You should join RimfireCentral.com....It is a great forum for just rimfires. How accurate are the 5-6" barrels? I'm looking for turtle hunting accuracy to 40-75 yards I don't think you would have any problem with decent ammo. But you could still have a longer barrel that will be quiet and a little more accurate if you use subsonic ammo.

This is my 10" 10/22. It cycles everything I have put through it. With the stock folded it fits in my truck's console.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

You ever shoot a .223 SBR? Those things are freaking loud. I have no interest in being around one again without any hearing protection.
